Baby Soft Cube

Quando a minha filha era bebé, há pouco mais de 7 anos, comecei a fazer-lhe este cubo em tecido. Cortei todas as peças e maior parte das fitas, prendi tudo com alfinetes e coloquei de parte. Já não recordo bem, mas devo-me ter distraído com outros projectos, e quando dei por ela, a bebé já era demasiado grande para o cubo. 

When my daughter was a baby, over 7 years ago, I started making her this fabric baby soft cube. I've cut the pieces and most of the ribbons, pinned everything I could together and set the project apart. I can't recall, but I must have gotten distracted with some other projects, and when I realised, she was too old for it. 

De vez enquanto cruzava-me com o "cubo" quando andava a rebuscar por entre as minhas peças inacabadas. "Um dia acabo-o! Talvez a miúda até goste de brincar com ele ainda". Claro que o pensamento assim chegava, assim partia. Há sempre tanto por fazer, e o último projecto é sempre o mais interessante... mesmo que o não seja. 

Every now and then I would came across the "cube" while going through my unfinished projects. "One day I'll get to it! Maybe the girl might even still enjoy it". Of course as soon as the thought was coming, it was going away. There's always so much to do, and the last project is always more interesting that the one before... even when it's not. 

Três anos depois de ter a minha filha, tive o meu filho. Lá estava a minha oportunidade outra vez. Tenho a certeza que a determinada altura me devo ter cruzado com ele - enquanto ainda se adequava à idade do bebé - e pensei em terminá-lo. Tenho a certeza até que foi nessa altura que cortei e prendi com alfinetes o resto das fitas, mas sim, como imaginam, nunca cheguei a fazê-lo. 

Three years after having my girl, I had my boy. There was my chance again. I'm sure that at some point - while it was still age appropriate for him - and I thought about finishing it. I am sure, it was by then that I cut and pinned the rest of the ribbon pieces, but, yes, as you guess, I never sewed the whole thing together. 

Avançando, estamos em 2018. Mudei de casa e quando o fiz dei imensos retalhos e outros aviamentos. Andei a remexer nos projectos inacabados e a decidir se os mantinha, se reutilizava o material ou se dava tudo. Por qualquer motivo que desconheço, não fui capaz de me desfazer dele. Quando nos mudámos em Agosto, devo ter-me cruzado novamente com isto, e acredito que foi numa tarde de Setembro que finalmente me dispus a isso. 

Fast forward, we're in 2018. I moved and gave a lot of scraps of fabric and notions away. I had to go through my unfinished projects and decide whether I keep it, reuse the fabric or just give it away. Somehow, I wasn't able to part from it, so I kept it. When I moved in August, I probably came across this again, and I believe that it was a September afetrnoon, when I finally got to it. 

A minha amiga e colega de trabalho estava grávida pela segunda vez, de uma menina que nasceu em Novembro, e eu soube que ai estava novamente a minha oportunidade. E foi o que finalmente fiz. Acabei o cubo e costurei-o em cerca de 5 minutos. Vejam só a ironia. Adicionei no interior dois pequenos guizos para dar mais interesse ao cubo. As fitas que usei, eram pequenos restos de outros projectos anteriores e gostei de ver como tinha ali vários tamanhos, cores e texturas diferentes. 

My friend and co worker was pregnant with her second child, a baby girl that was born back in November, and I knew there was my chance again, to finish this. And I finally did. I sewed the whole thing in about 5 minutes. That's ironic, isn't it? I also added two little rattles when filling it to add a bit more fun to it. The ribbons I used were little leftovers from previous projects and I like that they had so many different sizes, colors, and textures. 

E foi assim que depois de tanto tempo, este cubo se tornou a primeira prenda de Natal que costurei no ano passado. Oh e sim, ainda tenho mais umas quantas para vos mostrar. Estou até bem orgulhosa de algum delas. 

And this is how, after all this time, this soft cube became my first Christmas gift being sewn last year. And oh yes, I still have some more christmas gift to show you. I actually was so proud of some. 

Bowling Pin & Ball Game #2

Não foi a primeira vez que fiz este jogo de bowling em tecido... mas já passaram alguns anos desde a primeira vez que o fiz. Desde então que tinha vontade de voltar a fazer um novamente mas nunca surgia a oportunidade, e sabe muito bem quem costura que a lista do que queremos fazer nunca termina. 

It's not the first time I made this fabric bowling game... but a few years have gone since I first made it. I wanted to make another ever since but the oportunity was never around, and I know that all the sewers out there know that our to do list is a never ending one. 

Porém, neste último Natal consegui fazer várias prendas, entre elas este jogo para um menino muito querido de quatro anos. Os tecidos comprei-os numa loja local. Escolhi três dentro das minhas cores preferidas que jogassem bem entre si e não podia ter gostado mais do resultado. Acabei por aproveitar o tecido para outras coisas também e ainda tenho muito. 

This last Christmas though, I was able to make several of my gifts and this game was one of them, I made it for a sweet four year old boy. I bought the different fabrics at a local fabric shop. I chose them within my fave colors and I made them match, I couldn't be happier. I actually used the fabric for a few more things and I still have a lot left. 

O molde é da Mignon Prider e aparentemente o link que eu tinha no post do 1º jogo, cujo molde testei na altura, já não funciona. Por isso, a quem possa interessar, sigam este novo link AQUI. Na altura do teste, fiz apenas 3 pinos, era bem mais lenta a costurar porque agora tenho a sensação que levei mais tempo com esses três da altura, do que com estes 6 agora. 

The pattern is from Mignon Prider and aparently the link I had in my first set post, for the pattern I tested back then, isn't working. So, for those that might be interested, just follow this new link HERE. Back when I did the test, I made only 3 pins, as I was much slower sewing and I have this feeling that 3 of them took me longer to make than all these new 6. 

E para terminar, só para vos mostrar como ofereci o jogo ao menino. Arranjei uma caixa de cartão cujo tamanho era perfeito para os seis pinos. A bola ficou ali perfeitamente e ainda me deu foi vontade de fazer mais uma para preencher o espaço vazio. Resisti à tentação. 

To finish, I just wanted for you to see how I packed it for the boy. I got a card box with the perfect size for the sis pins. The ball had a perfect space for itself and I swear I wanted to make a second one just to fill in the empty space. I resisted though. 

Fabric Activity Cube

Durante muitos anos maravilhei-me com os chamados "quiet  books", traduzido à letra seria um livro do sossego, com actividades para manter os pequeninos quietos. Adorava ver páginas e páginas deles. E desde a primeira vez que vi um que um projecto do género entrou para a minha lista... sim, aquela interminável lista de coisas que gostava de fazer um dia. 

I've been amazed by those quiet books forever, if you don't know them, they are activity to keep young kids, well, quiet. I loved to go through the different pages. And since I first saw one of these it made it to my neverending sewing wish list. 

Nunca fiz um até ano passado, quando consegui fazer algo semelhante para oferecer ao filho de uma amiga, e garanto-vos que apesar dos pequenos defeitos, foi das coisas que mais prazer me deu fazer até hoje. O que eu fiz não foi um livro mas sim um cubo de seis painéis de actividades que se podem unir por botões e elásticos uns aos outros. A criança pode brincar com ele aberto, ou com ele fechado. 

I've never made one until last year though, when I got to make a similar thing for a friend's son, and I can assure you that despite the tiny faults it might have, it was one of the things I enjoyed making the most so far. I made not a book but a cube though, out of six panels that can be put together through buttons and elastics. The child can play with it flat, or close it and give it shape. 

Optei por fazer painéis com actividades que permitissem treinar a destreza, e passo a explicar cada deles, da esquerda para a direita e de cima para baixo. No primeiro coloquei 3 fechos de correr, no segundo um fecho clip, para crianças mais pequenas este não é muito fácil de usar, mas ainda assim, pode sempre ir tentando. No terceiro coloquei os números de 1 a 5 em cima (numa espécie de bordado com missangas) e logo por baixo uma fita com a quantidade de bolinhas correta. Passando para a fila de baixo, uma árvore com maçãs (botões) para pôr e tirar, no meio, fechos de molas e por fim, os atacadores para aprenderem a colocar ou simplesmente a dar o laço. 

I chose to make panels that allowed the child to practise his skills, and I will explain each one. from left to right and from top to bottom. In the first one I sewed 3 zippers, in the second a clip closure, this one might be a bit hard to use for smaller children, but still they can always keep on trying. In the third one I added the numbers from 1 to 5 (with some kind of embroidered beads) and then ribbons with the correct among of balls for each one of them. In the bottom row, there's a tree with apples (buttons) to put on and off, in the middle, kam snaps and to finish, the laces so the child learns how to lace it and tight. 

Tirando o painel dos números, usei diferentes formas de fechos pois os miúdos são deparados com todos eles nas suas roupas, mochilas, etc. e o facto de conseguirem usá-los sozinhos faz deles muito mais autónomos e independentes, e eu adoro uma criança independente que se desenrasca sozinha (o meu filho mais novo, está mesmo a precisar duma coisa destas também). 

Apart from the numbers panel, I used different closure methods that kids find in their own clothes, bags, etc. and getting them on their own makes them so much autonomous and independent, and oh boy do I love an independent child (my youngest clearly could use one of these too). 

Para o cubo se manter direito quando está montado, arranjei uma caixinha em cartão praticamente do mesmo tamanho para colocar dentro e voilá, feito. Apesar deste cubo já ter um ano, lembrei-me de o partilhar agora porque é uma óptima sugestão de prenda para o Natal. Aliás, este ano quero fazer um em formato livro e ando a inspirar-me. Vamos esperar para ver como sai. 

For the cube to keep its shape when fully assembled, I grabbed a small card box basicly the same size as the cube and voilá, done. Although this one is from last year's, I thought I could share it anyway since it is such a good Christmas gift suggestion. Actually, I want to make another one, as a book this year and I have been getting inspired. Let's see how it'll turn out. 

Swoodson Says Pattern Tour

Esta é uma publicação diferente. De vez enquanto aparecem por aqui algumas peças aparte as roupas para os miúdos ou para mim. Gosto de, por vezes, me dedicar a outros projetos, sejam costura ou não. Neste caso, continuamos dentro da costura, sim, com um brinquedo para miúdos. Na verdade, é um três em um, eu diria. Apresento-vos a palete de pintor, molde que escolhi fazer para o pattern tour da Stephanie do blog Swoodson Says.  E como dizia eu acima, é um três em um, porque antes de mais nada, é uma palete para se brincar ao faz de conta, claro. Mas tem mais duas características: serve perfeitamente como almofada, e é também um puzzle de cores.

This is a different post today. Once in a while a few pieces that aren't clothing for me or the kids, take place. Sometimes, I like to dedicate myself to different projects, sewing related or not, it is in this case though, with a kid's softy. In fact, this is a three in one, I'd say. Let me introduce you the little artist palette, that's the pattern I chose to make for Stephanie, from Swoodson Says pattern tour. And as I said above, this is a three in one, because it is a pretend play paintor's palette, of course. But it is also a perfect soft pillow, and a color puzzle. 

Como? Cada uma das cores tem uma parte removível que "fecha" com velcro na respetiva cor costurada na palete. A pensar na palete a ser usada como almofada, a designer faz uma chamada de atenção para se usar a parte mais suave do velcro, na parte que fica costurada à palete para não magoar a pele ao encostar a cara, por exemplo. Para fazer as cores usei restos de feltro que tinha por casa, e o velcro, na foto do molde está bem mais bonitinho porque as cores correspondem às da palete, mas como apesar de eu saber que tenho mais cores, não as encontrei, usei velcro branco mesmo. Só tive o cuidado de usar cores iguais de linha - o que compreende estar constantemente a trocar linha e bobine que é coisa que me faz revirar os olhos, assim muito mesmo, mas claro, vale a pena porque fica muito mais giro ;) 

How? Well, each color as a removable part that "closes" with matching colors velcro to the palette's colors. And instructions call up your attention to the fact that softest piece of velcro should be sewn to the palette's colors instead of the removable pieces, so it keep the pillow soft, protecting kids skin. To make the colors I used felt scraps frm my stash, and although the pattern's palette photos look prettier than mine with the matching velcro colors, and I just used white instead, because even though I knew I had other velcro colors, I just couldn't find them. I only made sure I used matching thread then - which means changing thread in my machine constantly, and that's something to make me roll my eyes, like a lot, but of course, it's worth it to get a prettier look ;) 

Eu enganei-me e fiz a palete ao contrário, isto é, em espelho à original, mas também não faz mal de nenhum, porque sabe bem quem está habituado a elas, que tanto existem de uma forma ou outra. O material aconselhado no molde para a palete em si, é tecido polar, mas como eu não tinha em cor pastel e não estava virada a comprar mais tecido algum, usei o que tinha por casa, e acabou por ser a malha que usei aqui, para o pijama do S. Ao contrário do aconselhado, saltei a parte de juntar entretela e vá lá, tive sorte e até correu bem. 

I made a mistake and my palette is reverse to the original, it is mirrored if you prefer, but that's fine because to those who are familiar with palettes, you know they came both ways anyway. The pattern suggests the use of fleece fabric, but I didn't have that in beige and wasn't up to buy any more fabric so I got stuck with what I already had, so I used the knit I used here for S. pajamas. I didn't interface it either, as sujested, but I got lucky and it worked just fine.

Refashion Month with Fairies, Bubbles & Co.

Today we have a guest coming back from the special Refashion Week I hosted in January, with portuguese bloggers only. Maria from Fairies, Bubbles and Co. is now living in the UK, but she's also from this beautiful country of mine. She has something I wanted before I became a mom, which is, having twins! I didn't though! but she did and she sews beautiful garments for her two lovely daughters. She has been sewing for herself as well, and I must say, I like her adult clothes even better than the kids ones... This time though, she didn't make any clothes for this refashion, she actually did something that is on my list.

Oh, and by the way, I want to apologise Maria and everyone else, that this post goes live so late, but baby S. isn't ok yet. The fever is finally gone, but now he's got his face, chest and belly full of red ugly spots.

Hi, I’m Maria and I blog over at Fairies, Bubbles & Co. where I share my sewing adventures and since I participated in Magda’s last edition I started to look to my RTW clothes (and my husband’s too) in a different way and trying to see what I can possibly make with that fabric when we don’t wear it anymore. This time (again!) I used a shirt from my husband that had a collar in pretty bad shape and could not be used anymore. I had this shirt for some time now, but was not sure what to do with it. 

 

The fabric is good and thick, so it was too good not to be used, but a bit too hot for the summer and on the other hand I had my girls bagging me to make something for their babies. This is something that was making me feel guilty, I confess. The girls like and wear the clothes I make them but what they really want are clothes for their babies and toys and I can’t blame them, they are still children and before they grow too much I decided to make them something to play, using this fabric. This is how dad’s old shirt became a doll sleepsack!

   

Making things for the girls to play was even one of my sewing resolutions for this year and the only one that I hadn’t achieved so far, so it was about time! Some time ago I purchased a pattern and a book with projects, but in the end I used a free pattern, the Lua sleepsack for dolls from StraightGrain, that I had downloaded as soon as it was released, but once again, was waiting until now :-) For this project I used only the shirt sleeves (still have plenty of fabric!), a tiny bit of a fat quarter that I purchased when I started sewing and the fabrics for the lining and piping are scraps from other projects. The only thing I didn’t had was the bating.

     

Except for the piping the sleepsack was easy and fast to sew. The piping was not difficult, but was time consuming because there were a lot of curves in such a small space and after that part it was really fast. The only change to the original, was using Kam snaps instead of buttons.

 

 And this is how a made two happy little girls :-) Thank you for having me Magda :-)

Sarah the Starfish Pattern (testing)

Alguém se lembra do jogo de bowling, cujo molde, de Mignon Prider testei o ano passado? Gostei desse teste, e da ideia de fazer algo diferente do habitual. Por isso, quando a Mignon me contactou com um novo molde por testar, fiquei feliz pela oportunidade. Desta vez, testei um peluche, em forma de uma estrela do mar (com guiso, ou não dentro), a Sarah Starfish. tão fofa, não é? E, testar para esta designer é tão fácil. O molde é super simples, e as instruções já estavam perfeitas, só um erro ou dois ortográficos (no teste, já foi corrigido, claro!).

Can you remember the fabric bowling game pattern by Mignon Prider, I've tested last year? That was a fun test, I loved to do something different from what I usually do. So, when I heard from Mignon again, with a new pattern to test, I was happy and of course, jumped in. This time, I've tested the Sarah Starfish pattern. How cute? And, testing for this designer is so easy.  Sarah the starfish, is an easy to make softie, with (or without if you want to) rattle inside, the pattern is quite simple, and the instructions were nearly perfect, not much to note. 

O tecido sugerido para este projeto é pelucia ou polar, mas porque sou atrevida, cortei uma saia de lã que tinha por aqui, mesmo antes de confirmar se tinha estes tecidos no meu stock pessoal. À partida são tecidos que não costumo ter. Na verdade, gostei muito do resultado. Ainda bem que a saia era bem comprida, porque acho que vou ter que fazer pelo menos mais um par de Sarahs, já que ambos os meus filhos a adoraram. Mas a Sarah não ficou cá por casa por muito tempo, já que no dia seguinte a ter sido costurada, participei no encontro linhas & agulhas em Faro, para o qual nos foi pedido que contribuíssemos com algo feito por nós, para doar ao Refugio Abuim Ascenção, e eu levei a estrelinha. Mas antes de ser doada, levámos ela a passear até à praia, para que nos deixasse com boas memórias... hehehehe... 

The suggested fabric for this project is minky or fleece, but just because I dare, I've cut into a wool skirt I had, before even looking through my stash. I already knew those were fabrics I don't usually have a lot (or any) of. I actually really like how it turned out. I am glad the skirt was long because I just might have to make a pair of Sarahs. Both my kids loved it so much, but this one wasn't going to stay around for too long. Last weekend I attended a meeting of knitters, sewers, etc. We were asked to bring something to donate to a local charity organization, and I loved the idea. Sarah the starfish was donated the day after she was made, but before she left us, we visited the beach, so she could leave us with a good memory of her... hehehehe...

I've been MIA lately. It's not that I haven't been sewing, in fact I have done a lot, I just haven't been blogging. I am trying to get back to it slowly though, and just to kick off I am bringing home a guest post from last year. Enjoy!

Hello Sew McCool readers. My name is Magda E. and I blog over House of Estrela. Today I am here to show you how to make a baby toy on your own. I have to tell you though, that I made a commitment with myself, I will not buy any fabrics or other supplies because I have too many already... well, actually, after a couple of years sewing from what I have, my stash is quite smaller now. so, everytime I make something, I use from what I already have. For this one, I have used a scrap from a baby shirt and a small stuffed dog (we got years ago from a very well known fast food chain). 

If you have any fury fabric, that would look good. I had this one and a plain white one as choices, but I went for this one, because I think the contrast would be more interesting for my baby. It is a very quick sew, you don't even need a sewing machine. I handstitched mine too. And here's how I made it:

You can use any animals you'd like. The rectangle for the tube is folded in the photo. 

I didn't, but you can also include a rattle within the filling to make it even more sensorial for the baby. 

And we're so close to finish! This is a great quick and easy last minute gift because you can make in a few minutes. Or you can make a few of these, with different animals and tell a story to your little one with them. If your baby can hold objects already, this is a perfect one.

Charity Sewing

Eu sei que já estamos em Março, e eu aqui vou-vos falar do Natal, mas acreditem que é por uma boa causa. Há já alguns anos que, por essa altura, escolho, pelo menos, um projeto solidário do qual possa parte com as costuras. O sentimento de dar a quem mais precisa é uma das melhores experiências de sempre. No último Natal, antes ainda de eu ter procurado por algum projeto a decorrer, a minha amiga Patrícia propôs-me a mim e a mais algumas amigas, costurarmos para os meninos e mães da instituição Mom's & Kids. Esta instituição particular, visa apoiar o núcleo familiar, e com capacidade para 16 utentes, acolhe mães e filhos e ajuda-os/guia-os numa reintegração social. Fomos várias as bloggers (visitar links abaixo) a participar desta iniciativa e reunimos hoje em posts, não só para partilhar o que fizemos para oferecer a esses meninos e suas mães, mas principalmente para divulgar a instituição. Não deixem de visitar o site da instituição, ou a sua página do facebook, e se puderem ajudar, não se acanhem. 

Quanto à minha doação, eu fiz para o mais pequenino da casa. O S. partilha o 1º e último nome com o meu filho e é apenas dois meses mais novo. Claro que fiquei mais sensibilizada a fazer uma prenda para esse menino. Escolhi fazer um saquinho para dormir quentinho, um brinquedo de pano e um par de sapatos, no entanto, estes últimos não saíram bem à primeira e fiquei sem tempo para fazer outro par =(. Comprei uma manta polar para usar no saco. A escolha de cores não era nenhuma e teve de ser mesmo branco, por isso dei-lhe cor nos detalhes do viés feito em casa. O molde foi de uma revista que tinha comprado havia pouco tempo e não vinha em tamanho real, por isso tive que o aumentar por minha conta. O brinquedo de pano tinha que ir também. Com cores vivas de um lado e azul do outo, tem ainda no interior um plástico fino e resistente (até a lavagens) que faz barulho quando manuseado. A G. também teve um e adorava. O S. herdou o da mana e também gosta imenso. 

I know this is March already, and I am about to bring Christmas talking back, but believe me, it is for a good cause. For a few years now, I have made a commitment to be part of, at least, a charity sewing challenge around Christmas time.  The feeling of giving to someone that needs it (whatever it is), is one of the greatest you can ever experience. Last Christmas before I searched for any charity project going on, my friend Patrícia, comes with this idea of sewing for the charity institution Mom's & Kids and a few of us followed. The reason why this post is written in Portuguese as well is simple. We bloggers that made the items to give them, are rounding up today, sharing our makes,  in order to try to help this Charity Institution to reach more people. 

I made a sleep sack and a blanket (a pair of shoes was also on the plans but didn't happen) for the youngest kid in there. His first and last name are the same as my own son't and he's only two months younger, so I felt connected to him easier. I bought a fleece blanket o upcycle into this, and used trong colours as a constrast fabric. The little blanket has a plastic inspide that makes noise. My own kids had one of these and they absolutely loved it.

Bowling Pin & Ball Game

Not long ago, I was able to test a different kind of pattern. It wasn't something for the kids wardrobe, but it was still, something for the kids: a bowling game! And oh boy, did I enjoy making something different?! I definately did. This was a rather a quick and easy sew project, to which I was able to use scraps from my stash. To start there are only two pages to print and no need to piece anything together - which is something really cool, when you're used to print just too many to test anything like kids clothes. Instructions are clear and detailed. with step by step pictures all through the process. And, you get some very usuful tips through the tutorial. I swear there was nearly nothing to note while testing. This came out really easy. The pin ball measures 24 cm (9.5") tall and the ball is 29cm (11.5") round. This pattern, also includes 2 extra pages with reversed numbers on them. You can do some appliqué numbers to your pins if you wish to. 

Because the test happened to be so close to my friends little boy's birthday, this, of course, made the perfect gift for him - or so I thought. However, it took me a while to meet them, and since my friend reads this blog, I didn't want to ruin the surprise and have been postponing this over and over.
