The dress that didn't go that well

Scroll down for english, please!

In October it will be two years from my niece's wedding. Back then I showed you the little man's suit I made for S., as well as the dress I made for G. and the promise of showing you my own dress as soon as possible. All the family was matching. Despite though, the days, motnhs went through and for one or many reasons I never got around to share mine. It is so much easier to photograph the kids clothes. My own clothes are left behind so often. A few days ago I took the dress out of the wardrobe and photographed it at last.

To start, as I said in the post I made for G.'s dress - since I used the same fabric for both - I repeat myself. The grey fabric was left from the maternity pants I made myself (here), and the floral fabric was given to me by my MIL. The white lining came from an old satin-like curtain my sister gave me, I used it either on the top and bottom of the dress.

This dress is not perfect, althoug people really liked it at the ceremony to my surprise. I can't remember what pattern I used anymore, probably one from Burda or any other of my pattern magazines. Back then I was still breast feeding, so I needed to hack it in order to allow me a comfortable feeding. I chose to open the entire front, and add snaps to close (handsewn metallic ones in this case). In the photo below, you can see three of them, but I actauuly added about 5, almost all the way to the waistline. It was the first time I tried sewing rows of gathering with an elastic bobbin, and believe it was what caused it to not work so well, making the front look a bit askew. Unfortunately I didn't have the time to make another dress in time for the wedding so after many tears I had to improvise. I was really disillusioned with it, and even considered buying a RTW, I actually did search for one, but I couldn't find anything (breast feeding friendly and all) in the shades I wanted and the rest of the family were all set already. I used a red satin ribbon in the waist, it kinda covered the askew in it, and added a little touch too.

We didn't get the wedding photos soon after, the photographer who did the job was a friend's of the bride and it was the first wedding she did. We were really disappointed at the photos when we got them. No outside photos were taken because it rained that day, and the ones inside, looked so "homemade", many of them aren't even centered. I don't have a single full body photo. I either am holding S., or am covered in a shawl because it got cold... I have one photo left, with my V. and the bride and groom because we were her godparents, otherwise, I don't think I'd have any at all... In the photos I took at home, the ribbon is not on anymore. I know I used it for something else already, don't even know where it is, so it is plain to see the imperfection of the dress. And only when I took these photos I noticed those weird folds on the left side. I am not proud of this dress, but I am not ashamed of it either, that's why I am sharing it today. Things don't always go as we wished them to, but we keep on, that's what matters. Never forget that not everything has to be perfect in life.

12 Days of 1h Gifts |Guest Post|

Scroll down for enlgish, please.

For the last couple of days, Melissa from Rebel & Malice, has been hosting a series of handmade gifts that can be put together in one hour or less over her blog. Between one thing and the other, she also has guest bloggers sharing their own ideas too, and I have the pleasure of being one of them. It is my turn to do so, with a tutorial on how to make this princess crown hairclip, which you can find here. While you're staying here, I am sharing two more versions of these, one of them being a request from my own little princess.

Rainbow birthday dress |& cake|

Scroll down for english, please.

Who can still remember this post, when I mentioned the dress I made for my daughter's birthday party? It was made four months ago, but somehow, I never made it to share the dress. Today is the day.

Uns meses antes tinha visto o vestido anita ou ice cream da Sara (Made by Sara) e queria fazer algo inspirado nele. O tema arco íris era perfeito.

When I told my daughter to pick from three different themes for her party, she didn't think twice and chose the rainbow theme, and I knew write away what to sew her to match it. A few months before, I had seen Sara's (Made by Sara) Ice Cream dress and I had been wanting to sew one inspired by hers. The rainbow theme was perfect.

Again, as always, I didn't spend anything to make it. I wanted a simple pattern, a colourful rainbow top, and as a background for the dress I wanted a light blue to remind us of the sky. I used a pattern I already had, I used GYCT Designs, The Firecracker Dress/Tunic (that I used ppreviously herehere and partialy here). I used (already cut) scraps from the duvet cover to make my rainbow, and for the blue, I used leftovers from a cotton sheet I had used in past projects. I slightly changed the pattern by rounding a bit of the top corners, and also did the straps different from the instructions, sewing them between layers, in both front and back pieces. By the way, I used the same blue fabric for the lining. For the skirt I didn't measure anything, I just used what was left from the fabric, in lenght and width, and I guess it didn't turn out too different from the pattern instructions.

This dress was definately a winner. Everyone loved it, especially its owner, who was so proud and happy to wear it. She was beautiful, of course. She also picked the shoes to put together that day, her Tinkerbell sandals, which she loves but didn't use often since their hurt her feet.

The dress wasn't the only rainbow I made though... there was also a cake, which took me about 5 hours to make. I made my usual cake mix, then I divided it into 6 bowls and added a different food coloring to each. The first piece I made was the purple and it didn't go that smoothly, I was able to save it though and fixed the problem for the next ones. After making the tower with all the colours I thought this would be too little for all the people invited so I made an extra base cake with all the colours mixed, it turned out a marbled reddish cake. I decorated with cream and little balls. It was a success as well. My daughter doesn't like to be the centre of all attentions so she usually hides when happy birthday is sang to her. At least she didn't cry this year. And yes, there are two candles in her cake, because we have celebrated both kids birthdays together. In one side there was the 4 candle for her, and in the other the 1 candle for him.

We (heart) Sara

Today is a special day. Our dear Sara, from  Made by Sara celebrates her birthday today, and together with a few friends, we wanted to make her a little surprise. Just because, she deserves it and because it feels good to make someone else happy. Sara, for those who don't know her yet (is still anyone yet who doesn't?), it´s a stay at home mom of 3 lovely children, and an excellent seamstress. She's a well informed person, curious and very generous too, always ready to help whoever needs her. She sews at an amazing pace and she makes wonderful and above all, super original things.

I've discovered Sara's blog through Refashion Month*, the series I host,as portuguese readers can check in a comment in this post. Back then I remember her blog wasn't as busy as it is right now, and it wasn't as centered in sewing as it is nowadays. Despite all that, it has been delicious to see how it has been growing, and as Sara herself has dedicated to this sewing passion that we both share. I like her great taste in fabric choices, but also her eye through patterns, some of which I would just pass blank if it wasn't for her capability to reinvent them, that is something I love. Sara has made too many gorgeous things to just pick a few favourite, but there's one I have to mention, because it isnpired me to make my daughter's last birthday dress. It is the Ice Cream dress she made for her youngest. Since I first saw it, I loved it and kept it in mind, waiting for an oportunity to make something similar. And that day came back in June. I will blog about it later.

* Sara was later part of the series too, herehere e here.

Lá para quarta feira espreita a caixa do correio! ;)

above is a special message for Sara, sorry for not translating!

Carnival (sort of) Series

The official day for Carnival over here is March 4th, next Tuesday. But celebrations have already started. On friday morning, some schools made parades with their classes. Each class usually picks up a theme and all kids are dressed up according to the theme, while others just go free.

My kid's class theme was animals, and they have made their costumes too, but they didn't make it to their school parade because they are so young and two of the carers are away. I was sad when I knew about it, but at least they got to wear they costumes in school and play around.

I am not one of the biggest Carnival lovers on earth, but I enjoy it too, so in celebration of the season, I have prepared a few posts for this week, according to the theme. I will be sharing how it was for my daughter is school last friday, I will share a couple refashioned costumes tutorials, I will reveal the costume I made G. this year and will also show you some of the past costumes I've made.

I hope you all follow me in this mini-series of mine and enjoy the fun that Carnival is supposed to bring!

What I've done in June

Yes, back in June I had a cousin's weeding. Why didn't I mention that before? I don't know, I guess I just forgot, there are always so much to blog about in my mind, but in the end, most of it, goes undone.
Anyway, as I was sayign June 30th more precisely I had my cousin's wedding and for this event I had 4 dresses to sew. My own - the first I thought about. My daughter's - of course, when I thought about making my own, it made total sense to make her one that would match mine. I also thought about making a tie to daddy, that would match too, but after all I bought it... I had too much to do already. So, my sister's and of course, a matching one for my niece.
This event took place one day after G.'s first birthday, so it was a very busy month for me, I had a lot to do, as I told you here
Here they are, my 50´s inspired dress ( I used a Burda's pattern) and my baby's matching dress.  Dad didn't have his tie on anymore but it was the same blue colour as our dresses.
I took off the original ribbon on the hat and glued this one with little hearts on it. much better.

front of the dress for my niece, she looked absolutely beautiful.

and the back of course.

my sister is the one in orange. and that's the dress I made her.
By the way, we were laughing because my cousin (brother of the bride's) didn't even know how to shoot the photo, and the one between me and my sister, she's really funny and said something about it that we just couldn't help but laughing).
So, what's your favourite?!
