The dress that didn't go that well

Scroll down for english, please!

In October it will be two years from my niece's wedding. Back then I showed you the little man's suit I made for S., as well as the dress I made for G. and the promise of showing you my own dress as soon as possible. All the family was matching. Despite though, the days, motnhs went through and for one or many reasons I never got around to share mine. It is so much easier to photograph the kids clothes. My own clothes are left behind so often. A few days ago I took the dress out of the wardrobe and photographed it at last.

To start, as I said in the post I made for G.'s dress - since I used the same fabric for both - I repeat myself. The grey fabric was left from the maternity pants I made myself (here), and the floral fabric was given to me by my MIL. The white lining came from an old satin-like curtain my sister gave me, I used it either on the top and bottom of the dress.

This dress is not perfect, althoug people really liked it at the ceremony to my surprise. I can't remember what pattern I used anymore, probably one from Burda or any other of my pattern magazines. Back then I was still breast feeding, so I needed to hack it in order to allow me a comfortable feeding. I chose to open the entire front, and add snaps to close (handsewn metallic ones in this case). In the photo below, you can see three of them, but I actauuly added about 5, almost all the way to the waistline. It was the first time I tried sewing rows of gathering with an elastic bobbin, and believe it was what caused it to not work so well, making the front look a bit askew. Unfortunately I didn't have the time to make another dress in time for the wedding so after many tears I had to improvise. I was really disillusioned with it, and even considered buying a RTW, I actually did search for one, but I couldn't find anything (breast feeding friendly and all) in the shades I wanted and the rest of the family were all set already. I used a red satin ribbon in the waist, it kinda covered the askew in it, and added a little touch too.

We didn't get the wedding photos soon after, the photographer who did the job was a friend's of the bride and it was the first wedding she did. We were really disappointed at the photos when we got them. No outside photos were taken because it rained that day, and the ones inside, looked so "homemade", many of them aren't even centered. I don't have a single full body photo. I either am holding S., or am covered in a shawl because it got cold... I have one photo left, with my V. and the bride and groom because we were her godparents, otherwise, I don't think I'd have any at all... In the photos I took at home, the ribbon is not on anymore. I know I used it for something else already, don't even know where it is, so it is plain to see the imperfection of the dress. And only when I took these photos I noticed those weird folds on the left side. I am not proud of this dress, but I am not ashamed of it either, that's why I am sharing it today. Things don't always go as we wished them to, but we keep on, that's what matters. Never forget that not everything has to be perfect in life.

March Wrap Up

A minha cidade. A minha manta. Limpei a máquina a fundo. Fomos ver a prima no estádio do Algarve. Lanche. Primeira pintura dele.

Although it is so cold, and Spring seems to forgot it should be here already, we have had a couple sunny days already, that we managed to enjoy with the kids. She's so pale, everytime I see the sun shining, I want to be outside with her, to see if she gets a little tan. And that's how we got to enjoy some walks in a few of the nearby beaches. My mom amigurumi. S. playing with the magnetic letters, too bad it doesn't seem to last longer than a minute, then he throws it all down. Decision on supplies. Them together, he plays with legos, she cuts paper. I made jeans for him. I bought a beautiful knit. We visited the dinossaurus exhibition. We made an Easter rabbit. My town. My blanket. I deep cleaned my machine. We watched my niece playing on the Algarve Stadium. We built a butterfly. I made myself a top (and other things I can't share yet). Watching the ducks. Frozen nails. I finished the book as I drank some hot chocolate the hubby brought me quite late. Them, painting with brushes and watercolors. The monkey was in the washer, she waited. A beans and rice bear. Breakfast. Afternoon snack. His first painting.

As for the blog, same old same old... it has been really slow. I made 4 posts in March and one of them was the previous month wrap up. From the other three, I made two sewing related posts and one on how to make your own homemade liquid soap. As for the sewing, I shared a Holiday Cut Out dress, pattern from Bella Sunshine Designs and the refashioned Walker Jeans for S., pattern by Momma Quail Patterns. February Wrap Up

Scroll down for english, please!

No blogue as coisas estiveram calmas.

Vejam aqui.

We're half way through March and I totally forgot to share my wrap up from last month. So, here we go. It was Carnival last month, so we had some costumes here, Elsa (bought it) for my G., a mommy made Olaf for S and a mermaid costume my niece L. requested. V. and I had one of those moments, him with Elsa's crown and I with Minnie ears... excuse any little thing (NOT!). S. got a little busier on his own, he loves the clothespins but not for too long. I've been organizing my cabinets again (as I often do) and it felt really good to find I was left with two completely empty shelves in this particular one. I got a rose for Valentine's. A little treat for me on a morning break - or afternoon who knows? We visited a park with some animals there. I made a muslin for the jeans I posted a few days ago, it is still unfinished. I bought stamps, a puncher and glitter, with my kids birthdays party in mind already. I started a recycling project using cardboxes and cans. I tried to make paper snow flakes for the first time. I painted with watercolour, inspired by my daughter's plastic artist skills (mine is the one with the roses, hers is the one with the word love on it). I started my own bikini for next summer... oh... summer! And to finish, I made my boy a pinny, and I used selfmade plastic fabric for this one.

Things have been quite in the blog. Although Project Run & Play being back to his original format and all my enthusiasm about it, I was only able to sew along with the first week. I made a tunic for G. Then I was part of Bella Sunshine Designs tour with a Gabriella Winter Coat hack, and to finish, I posted my test piece of the Mori Dress and Top pattern, released last month. You can see more about these, clicking on the photos above.

I also published about refashioning for Cose+, but that is in portuguese only.

Walker Jeans by Momma Quail Patterns

Scroll down for english, please.

Last monday, Momma Quail Patterns had released her lattest pattern, the Walker Jeans... Yes, yes, I want to reduce the number of pattern tests and all that, but the truth's that I've been behaving quite well. What I can do though? Everytime I come across one of Amy's tests, there I go, I just can't turn my back to it. This time, I was drawn by the bootleg option of these jeans. The pattern comes with two options, the first one is a straight leg and then the bootleg, there's also the possibility of making shorts versions too, including cutting lines to adjust height - the pattern height is a bit long, adding room to grow, good for our always growing fast kids. In the case of my little one, Amy's patterns are often too long because he's quite short legged, but other than that, the pattern fits perfectly elsewhere. This pattern, as most patterns from the designer, are meant for boys, even though, this includes girl fly and zipper directions/instructions. It starts at 12M size and goes up to size14. My little boy looks really cool in his jeans. Unfortunately it was too cold and I didn't take his hoodie off for the photos, but he was wearing this shirt I made him last year (and yes, still fits). Even dad was feeling all proud, since both pieces I made, were refashioned from his own clothes. The boy seemed to approved his new jeans as well, he ran, jumped, rolled in the sand, climbed and never complained.

Try Something New Every Month February

Scroll down for english, please!

I left February's project for the final days, and that's why I have finished it right on the last day of the month. Alhough I was able to take photos right away, unfortunately it wasn't possible for me to post about it until the present day. To those who don't know what am I talking about, check out this post. The theme for the month was tactile crafts, which was the perfect excuse to make something I've been planning to for far too long.

For a few years now, we gave up buying liquid soaps in our house, we always use bars because the price and time they long comparing to the liquid ones is too much, so, we switched one thing for the other and quickly got used to it. Of coursee, liquid soap is more practical though, and that's why I have been wanting to try this for a while. Let's see, I don't know how much exactly I got but I know it was enough to last a good while, and for the price of a soap bar only. You can also use scrapings from others.

É das coisas mais fáceis de fazer. A sério.

It is the quickiest thing to make. Really. After a quick google search, I found lots of tutorials on how to do it. After reading a few, I went the with what seemed easier to me, all I had to do was to grate a soap bar, mix it with 12 glasses of water and 1 or 2 table spoon(s) of liquid glycerin. Hit it on low temperature, and when it boiled, I had to stir to dilute well. Let it to cool down and put it in the jars. In my case, I let it cool overnight, so in the morning I had a more doughy product rather than liquid, but that was quick to fix, I just had to pour a bit of hot water and stir some more until it got just right.

Holiday Cut Out Dress (Slightly) Hacked

Scroll down for english, please!

Can you guys remember this post from a few days ago? I wanted to share this dress the day after said post, instead I am only doing it today, since I didn't get around to do it before. And better late than never - yep,  there are a lot of projects that were left unposted for now.

Apenas pequenas coisas.

I don't have modeled photos of this, it is too cold and I didn't want to bother my girl. Besides I think I made it just a bit too long (or so I think, it has happened before just to find out I was wrong), good thing she will probably grow a little until summer (or at least I hope she will). So, this is the Holiday Cut Out Dress & Top pattern from Bella Sunshine Designs, that I used before here. I hacked it just a little bit. Just a few details.

To start I skipped all the cut out pieces, which is what names this pattern. Instead of lining the bodice, I used bias to finish it. I've added lace to the waistline, and an extra organza skirt with some lace on the hem too. The yellow fabric is the same I used for the bodice and lining skirt from this dress, which visually reminds this one I just made. I wanted a light fabric for this, and besides the black one, I didn't have that much to choose from my own stash - there's no way I am buying new one, I am again in a buy-nothing-and-use-all-I-have-to-the-max fase. I need to empty my house a little.
