Not Just a Sunsuit Pattern Tour

Scroll down for english, please!

Today, together with Ari, Mel and Adrianna, I have the biggest pleasure to kick off Ajaire's first tour, the "Not Just a Sunsuit" tour for her Paneled Sunsuit pattern. It has ten different views in it, which makes it a super diverse pattern, one of those worth the investment since you can sew so many different pieces out of it.

excuse the stain, she kept wanting to drink water and ended up wetting the dress

We were allowed to use the pattern as we sish and make as many changes as we'd like to. And so be it. I didn't make any changes to the pattern itself, but to the way I sewed it. To start, I chose to make the jumper version, and gave up on the lining. I used the top of the front and back pieces (both made of two pieces, between which it is possible to add bias or piping), as facings. Because I skipped the lining, the facings weren't enough to finish the armscyes, so I had to use bias tape, sewing it into the inside completely.

I used leftovers from a yellow thin cotton sheet for the top of the dress, and leftovers from the shorts I made for myself a couple of months ago. Definately, the almost unperceptible stretch from this fabric is a big headache. Once this fabric was darker then the yellow, and pretty visible under it (top), and since I didn't like to see it so much, I) sewn the same polka dotted bias from the armscyes in both parts, and solved the issue. I used the same bias tape for the pockets in the skirt, so it would contrast with the striped black and white. Just as I used this last fabric, to make the straps of the jumper. In the top back piece, instead of making a tube and insert the elastic, I sewed the bobbin elastic directly to it.

When I finished and looked at the dress, I wasn't completely happy with this finishing in the back, but as I watched G. wearing it, I've convinced myself, bit by bit, that it wasn't as bad as I first thought. I was surprised with my daughter though, she had been developing a lot lately and growing, and suddenly I went from sewing her size 2 to size 4. And it's not big on her at all, I didn't even check the measurement chart, I picked size 4 for instinct, hoping it would fit next year, but it fits her as a glove, and had it been smaller and wouldn't fit for sure.

Participem e boa sorte!

And now that you've read through here, I'll leave you the best part. For the time the tour is on, Ajaire is giving 15% off of the Paneled Sunsuit pattern. Besides, you get a chance to get it for free if you join the giveaway below. Take your chances and good luck!

WIP: Granny Squares

Making granny squares has became an addiction. I just have to start them and then I can't stop. And the fact that I spent a week at my mom's, has translated into an increase in squares made. I am far from having all the ones I need, but I already have quite a few. And the new addiction has given us a few laughs too, as I taught crochet to my niece (8) and my nephew (9). They have only learnt how to do the chain, he's better at it then she is, and they did a huge one, then another, and another and then tied them all together, and tied it around a small palm tree in my mom's street, although one of the neightbors cut it off as soon as she stepped out her door. She said she thought it was witchcraft, WTF?! The kids were super disappointed. Back to my own work, I am enjoying it, until the day I came back (tuesday) I had 35 squares finished and some of them were put together already. Since then I only made a couple, about 4, and spent some time putting a few more together, I have 20 together right now.

Competing: Crafting Con I80's MoviesI

Scroll down for english, please!

Can you remember my Princess Sophia inspired look I did for a guest post at Crafting Con last year? Well, this year I get to compete in the 80's Movies theme. I used the movie I remember best - since I am a child of the 80's too - as my inspiration, and made an outfit for my boy. He's been neglected next to his big sister. You can read the whole post and find out which movie it is, in HERE. Please show us some love <3

WIP: granny squares - for a change!

Scroll down for english, please.

Ever since I've put the granny square blanket my mom made, in G.'s bed a few days ago, I've been feeling like I too would like to make one. I've been wanting to make a scrap one for a while, just like mine, but that's something i couldn't even start yet. Back to the granny squares, in crochet, well... the idea has been around for a few days, and to make me make up my mind, I found the greatest spanish blog, which is hosting crochet lessons right now, for begginers, like myself. I watched lessons 1-5 and got the feeling that they were too easy and I actually knew a little about it. Two evenings ago I  played a little with the needle and a cheap wool I had bought to make a doll's hair - just like all the wool in my stash. After all, I always pass crochet and knitting stuff to my mom. Even though, I went searching online for granny squares. I didn't read anything, I just looked at the pictures and thought that maybe I was capable of starting something worth it. Yesterday morning, I went out and bought 5 balls of wool. I asked the old lady from the shop some advices such as the width of the thread, the needle's number (I didn't buy one though since I was sure I'd have one similar and I was right, I had the same number she told me which was n.3) and got to it. Taking a good look at my mom's blanket, I copied the pattern and started with the first squares. I bought 5 colors and used the red I already had, from last year, when I tried in vain to make myself a beret. Each square has 6 rows, but I still want to buy and add a white one to each of them. That's the same color I want to use to put them all together, but I won't think about that yet. first, I'm just going to entertain myself by make square after square.. and then, we'll see if I'll be capable of further. I bought the white today and commented with the old lady that I had six squares done already, which she answered I was on the good path. After that, I have made five more, the last one though (with a white round too) is not on the photos. I only follow two crochet and knitting focused blogs, Susana's and Naná's blogs. Two ladies I have already met in person, by the way. They have been a huge inspiration and have been making me feel like learning more about it, although I know that's not my thingy. The colors of their works always leave a smile on my face, especially those strong, vibrant colors, and that's exactly what I'd like on my own work.

July Wrap Up

Scroll down for english, please!

July was a busy month. A very, very busy month with a lot of partying. It started the 2nd with my baby boy's first birthday. Then, on the 5th we celebrated his and his big sister's birthdays in a rainbow themed party. Everyone thought it was all the about the gay pride (which was all over facebook back then), but although we support equal rights for all human beings, the rainbow party was decided long before that. The next weekend, we had a wedding to go to on Saturday and another birthday party from a friend on Sunday. The 17th was G.'s end of school party, with the White Night themed, I told you about before. On th 26th was the hubby's birthday (yes, all my loves have their birthdays in a row) but because he was working we only celebrated it on the 28th, which was actually my niece's birthday too. We didn't celebrate hers that day though, she was at a camp. We did a lot of beach, had dinner at an Italian restaurant, G. got a new bike. I love watching my kids sleep and S. does it in very funny ways. He's crawling so fast (and G. crawls with him), and he's standing although he has to hold to something yet.

I've kept my distance when it comes to blogging. I was here everyday, but I wasn't at the same time. I have focused on being out with my kids, have meals ready for my father who's been staying with us for over a month already, and sewing wasn't just one of my priorities lately. There were days when I'd sat before my supplies, or the sewing machine (I usually stand, but my legs have been too heavy because of the heat and I have to sit) and just didn't feel it. Thanks for my guests, Refashion Month kept the blog active, and posts coming. We had - again - a lot of inspiration coming and great tips shared. You can check all the posts HERE, or just click the links below for specific days.

As I always do, I too particiated in the series, and those were my contribution:

Apart from hosting Refashion Month, I had the pleasure to join other series and a tour. I was part of the Savings Made by Sewing series with some tips on saving in patterns. I shared a tutorial in my own blog, and a full post over Dana's blog. I was also part of the S is for Sewing E-book tour, and I got to make two clutches and a very fun t-shirt.

Reviewing my 2015 goals

I wanted to do this about a month ago, as a half year balancing of the goals I would try to complete during this year. The thing is that 2015 is past half way through (still can't believe it!), and I am not too happy with myself. I promised to do my best to get my goals done, but I don't think I have. More than anything, I've been overwhelmed, just it. Even with so much less to do, the feeling just won't let go.

So, anyway... my #1 goal was: Sew more of what my kids need - I believe this is the only goal that more or less has been acomplished. By passing a lot of pattern test calls with garments that they don't need, I focused on the ones we liked best and were actually missing. It hasn't been perfect, but it's the goal I can feel more proud of.

#2 goal: Sew more for myself - I made myself a shirt, a pair of shorts, a bikini and a dress (haven't blogged about this last one yet). I could have been doing more. I still have 5 months left to work on that, so hopefully, I can at least equal the amount of clothes I sewed myself last year. 4 in 7 months is not a lot.

#3 goal: Sew for the husband - zero. That's all I have to say. I've purchased some fabric just for him, though...

#4 goal: Sew presents ahead - I was doing so well until around May, then I just got behind and I have no more gifts ready to give.

#3 goal: Sewing for my house - I can't really think of anything I've done for my house right now. Maybe I haven't done anything at all.

Apart from the goals I mentioned I also wanted to keep sewing from my stash and refashioning, saving as much as I could as always. But I just couldn't do it. With the excuse of having a wedding to sew for, I went to Spain a few times, shopping for fabric and in all those times I brought more than I should. I also bought a few fabric pieces locally and even online, which is something I don't usually do. I've also been taking note of how much I spend on sewing and craft supplies and that'ssomething I will only check (total) by the end of the years. I believe I've been spending more than I ever did the previous years, it's like I was hunger to buy, just because.
