Dia de Los Muertos 2nd Annual Tour

Scroll down for english.

In Portugal, in this day we are celebrating All Saint's Day, a holiday with pagan origins just like many of our own religious holidays. Today though, I am not talking about the tradition in my country - mostly catholic - but a celebration of great meaning in the Latin american countries, especially Mexico where it began, and a few areas of the United States. It is Dia de Los Muertos, and it is with a great pleasure that I join the second annual tour organized by Melissa from Rebel and Malice. Follow her blog to learn and know more about this tradition, full of color, and meaning. Knowledge doesn't take much space, and knowing and respecting other traditions is a sign of intelligence, because that's the only way to be close to understand other people, even if we don't agree with them.

The belief says the deseaced ones didn't enjoy the mourning and sadness, so in these days they would return from the other world, and the living would celebrate their deceased loved ones lives, by celebrating with music, flowers, their favourite food and activities. I celebrate my birthday close to these days, so this year, I made myself a cake that would honor this fascinating culture. My birthday cake this year, was a Dia de Los Muertos style skull! It surprised the guests, made my 4 year old daughter smile, and I was happy about it. I didn't make the cake foundation though. I dind't have that much time so I bought a 3 layers ready made one. I filled them all with cream, then cut it into the skull shape, and covered it all in cream (I usually buy industrial ones since the ones from supermarkets are so hard to stir and get just right consistency).

Since I am quite fond of making and decorating cakes, I always have eatable decorations at home, such as little balls sugar, the pearls, sprinkles. Since we're also fond of pancakes, chocolate and strawberry topping are always around. After searching through all of my supplies, I started decorating my colourful skull cake. I used kiwi for the eyes, their slices looked perfect for it, or so I thought. It was a free deco, I used what I had around (the flowers on top were left from a chocolate cake G. asked me to make her teacher when she started pre school in September), I used mini chocolate dragees for the eyebrows.

I used strawberry topping to add color to the cake, and I used chocolate topping for the mouth, which spreaded a bit, but once in the fridge, it solidificated and was just fine. For the nose I used an inverted heart shaped cutter, and filled it with chocolate bits. The pearls were used all around, in order to add a little bit more of color, after all, joy is what's expected here.
