Baby Soft Cube

Quando a minha filha era bebé, há pouco mais de 7 anos, comecei a fazer-lhe este cubo em tecido. Cortei todas as peças e maior parte das fitas, prendi tudo com alfinetes e coloquei de parte. Já não recordo bem, mas devo-me ter distraído com outros projectos, e quando dei por ela, a bebé já era demasiado grande para o cubo. 

When my daughter was a baby, over 7 years ago, I started making her this fabric baby soft cube. I've cut the pieces and most of the ribbons, pinned everything I could together and set the project apart. I can't recall, but I must have gotten distracted with some other projects, and when I realised, she was too old for it. 

De vez enquanto cruzava-me com o "cubo" quando andava a rebuscar por entre as minhas peças inacabadas. "Um dia acabo-o! Talvez a miúda até goste de brincar com ele ainda". Claro que o pensamento assim chegava, assim partia. Há sempre tanto por fazer, e o último projecto é sempre o mais interessante... mesmo que o não seja. 

Every now and then I would came across the "cube" while going through my unfinished projects. "One day I'll get to it! Maybe the girl might even still enjoy it". Of course as soon as the thought was coming, it was going away. There's always so much to do, and the last project is always more interesting that the one before... even when it's not. 

Três anos depois de ter a minha filha, tive o meu filho. Lá estava a minha oportunidade outra vez. Tenho a certeza que a determinada altura me devo ter cruzado com ele - enquanto ainda se adequava à idade do bebé - e pensei em terminá-lo. Tenho a certeza até que foi nessa altura que cortei e prendi com alfinetes o resto das fitas, mas sim, como imaginam, nunca cheguei a fazê-lo. 

Three years after having my girl, I had my boy. There was my chance again. I'm sure that at some point - while it was still age appropriate for him - and I thought about finishing it. I am sure, it was by then that I cut and pinned the rest of the ribbon pieces, but, yes, as you guess, I never sewed the whole thing together. 

Avançando, estamos em 2018. Mudei de casa e quando o fiz dei imensos retalhos e outros aviamentos. Andei a remexer nos projectos inacabados e a decidir se os mantinha, se reutilizava o material ou se dava tudo. Por qualquer motivo que desconheço, não fui capaz de me desfazer dele. Quando nos mudámos em Agosto, devo ter-me cruzado novamente com isto, e acredito que foi numa tarde de Setembro que finalmente me dispus a isso. 

Fast forward, we're in 2018. I moved and gave a lot of scraps of fabric and notions away. I had to go through my unfinished projects and decide whether I keep it, reuse the fabric or just give it away. Somehow, I wasn't able to part from it, so I kept it. When I moved in August, I probably came across this again, and I believe that it was a September afetrnoon, when I finally got to it. 

A minha amiga e colega de trabalho estava grávida pela segunda vez, de uma menina que nasceu em Novembro, e eu soube que ai estava novamente a minha oportunidade. E foi o que finalmente fiz. Acabei o cubo e costurei-o em cerca de 5 minutos. Vejam só a ironia. Adicionei no interior dois pequenos guizos para dar mais interesse ao cubo. As fitas que usei, eram pequenos restos de outros projectos anteriores e gostei de ver como tinha ali vários tamanhos, cores e texturas diferentes. 

My friend and co worker was pregnant with her second child, a baby girl that was born back in November, and I knew there was my chance again, to finish this. And I finally did. I sewed the whole thing in about 5 minutes. That's ironic, isn't it? I also added two little rattles when filling it to add a bit more fun to it. The ribbons I used were little leftovers from previous projects and I like that they had so many different sizes, colors, and textures. 

E foi assim que depois de tanto tempo, este cubo se tornou a primeira prenda de Natal que costurei no ano passado. Oh e sim, ainda tenho mais umas quantas para vos mostrar. Estou até bem orgulhosa de algum delas. 

And this is how, after all this time, this soft cube became my first Christmas gift being sewn last year. And oh yes, I still have some more christmas gift to show you. I actually was so proud of some. 

Newborn Onesie for my nephew

Não sei se alguém se recorda, mas em 2014, um pouco antes do meu filho nascer, fiz-lhe dois bodies com um molde que eu mesma desenhei e que partilhei aqui no blog para quem queira usar também. Pois bem, desde esses dois não tinha tido oportunidade de voltar a fazer mais nenhum até que soubemos que a minha cunhada mais nova ia ter um menino. O menino já fez uma ano em Outubro - só para terem noção de há quanto tempo costurei este último.

I don't know if any of you can remember, but, back in 2014, just a little before my son was born,I made him two onesies with a self drafted pattern that I later shared on the blog for anyone to use. Well, I haven't made anymore of these ever since, until I knew my sister-in-law was having a baby boy. The baby boy was one in October - so you can have an idea of how long ago I sewed this latest one. 

Tinha apenas um metro deste tecido que comprei na Feira dos Tecidos numa visita a Lisboa para me encontrar com algumas amigas das costurices. Logo ali fiquei encantada com ele e pensei em fazer um pijama ou qualquer coisa assim para o meu filhote. E uns meses depois foi mesmo isso que fiz e que já foi partilhado aqui. Com o pouco que me sobrou desse metro de tecido consegui fazer este body.

I had bought just one meter of this fabric at Feira dos Tecidos, when I went to Lisbon to meet some of my sewing buddies. Right there I fell in love with it and thought about making some pajamas for my son or something like that. A few months after, that's exactly what I did, which I have shared here. With the little fabric Ihad left I was able to make the onesie. 

Não resisti a tirar esta foto acima, para comparar os tamanhos. Em cima o minúsculo body para o meu sobrinho, por baixo apenas a parte de cima do pijama que fiz para o meu filho em tamanho 2 anos. Fazer roupa para recém nascidos é uma coisa extremamente ternurenta.

I didn't resist taking the photo above, just so you could compare sizes. On top the tiny onesie for my nephew, and underneath only the top portion of the size 2 pajamas I made for my son. Making newborn clothes it's extremely cute. 

Como já mencionei acima, o molde é meu e só o tenho neste tamanho, a quem interessar, podem encontrar tanto o molde como o passo a passo para o mesmo aqui. Tem opção de manga curta ou manga comprida. Na altura para o meu filho fiz um de cada. É um projecto que requer o domínio de algumas técnicas e que dependendo da vossa experiência poderá levar mais ou menos tempo, o que eu acho pessoalmente é que vale a pena. Eu senti-me imensamente satisfeita ao terminar cada um dos que fiz até aqui.

As I mentioned above, it is a self drafted pattern, one size only, if you're interested you can find both pattern and instructions to sew it right here. It has a long and a short sleeve option. Back when I made my son's I did one of each. It is a project that requires some techniques knowledge and according to your experience might take more or less time, in my opinion, either way it is worth making. I did feel so pleased when I finished each one of them. 

É também uma oportunidade excelente de dar uso àqueles pequenos retalhos de tecidos que adoramos mas que não são suficientes para nada. Deixo abaixo - para quem ainda não viu - os exemplos dos que fiz para o meu filho também. No meu caso reciclei outras peças de roupa para os fazer, usando o color blocking. Ficaram bem giros e diferentes do que se costuma encontrar por ai. Ou seja, mesmo a minha cara.

It is also an excelente oportunity to put those small scraps from your bin, the ones you love deeply but are never enough for any of your projects. I leave below - for those who haven't seen it yet - the examples I made for my son too. In my case, I refashion other pieces to make them, using some color blocking. They got pretty awesome and different from those rtw around. So, just so me. 

Fabric Activity Cube

Durante muitos anos maravilhei-me com os chamados "quiet  books", traduzido à letra seria um livro do sossego, com actividades para manter os pequeninos quietos. Adorava ver páginas e páginas deles. E desde a primeira vez que vi um que um projecto do género entrou para a minha lista... sim, aquela interminável lista de coisas que gostava de fazer um dia. 

I've been amazed by those quiet books forever, if you don't know them, they are activity to keep young kids, well, quiet. I loved to go through the different pages. And since I first saw one of these it made it to my neverending sewing wish list. 

Nunca fiz um até ano passado, quando consegui fazer algo semelhante para oferecer ao filho de uma amiga, e garanto-vos que apesar dos pequenos defeitos, foi das coisas que mais prazer me deu fazer até hoje. O que eu fiz não foi um livro mas sim um cubo de seis painéis de actividades que se podem unir por botões e elásticos uns aos outros. A criança pode brincar com ele aberto, ou com ele fechado. 

I've never made one until last year though, when I got to make a similar thing for a friend's son, and I can assure you that despite the tiny faults it might have, it was one of the things I enjoyed making the most so far. I made not a book but a cube though, out of six panels that can be put together through buttons and elastics. The child can play with it flat, or close it and give it shape. 

Optei por fazer painéis com actividades que permitissem treinar a destreza, e passo a explicar cada deles, da esquerda para a direita e de cima para baixo. No primeiro coloquei 3 fechos de correr, no segundo um fecho clip, para crianças mais pequenas este não é muito fácil de usar, mas ainda assim, pode sempre ir tentando. No terceiro coloquei os números de 1 a 5 em cima (numa espécie de bordado com missangas) e logo por baixo uma fita com a quantidade de bolinhas correta. Passando para a fila de baixo, uma árvore com maçãs (botões) para pôr e tirar, no meio, fechos de molas e por fim, os atacadores para aprenderem a colocar ou simplesmente a dar o laço. 

I chose to make panels that allowed the child to practise his skills, and I will explain each one. from left to right and from top to bottom. In the first one I sewed 3 zippers, in the second a clip closure, this one might be a bit hard to use for smaller children, but still they can always keep on trying. In the third one I added the numbers from 1 to 5 (with some kind of embroidered beads) and then ribbons with the correct among of balls for each one of them. In the bottom row, there's a tree with apples (buttons) to put on and off, in the middle, kam snaps and to finish, the laces so the child learns how to lace it and tight. 

Tirando o painel dos números, usei diferentes formas de fechos pois os miúdos são deparados com todos eles nas suas roupas, mochilas, etc. e o facto de conseguirem usá-los sozinhos faz deles muito mais autónomos e independentes, e eu adoro uma criança independente que se desenrasca sozinha (o meu filho mais novo, está mesmo a precisar duma coisa destas também). 

Apart from the numbers panel, I used different closure methods that kids find in their own clothes, bags, etc. and getting them on their own makes them so much autonomous and independent, and oh boy do I love an independent child (my youngest clearly could use one of these too). 

Para o cubo se manter direito quando está montado, arranjei uma caixinha em cartão praticamente do mesmo tamanho para colocar dentro e voilá, feito. Apesar deste cubo já ter um ano, lembrei-me de o partilhar agora porque é uma óptima sugestão de prenda para o Natal. Aliás, este ano quero fazer um em formato livro e ando a inspirar-me. Vamos esperar para ver como sai. 

For the cube to keep its shape when fully assembled, I grabbed a small card box basicly the same size as the cube and voilá, done. Although this one is from last year's, I thought I could share it anyway since it is such a good Christmas gift suggestion. Actually, I want to make another one, as a book this year and I have been getting inspired. Let's see how it'll turn out. 

Wild Things Baby Shoes |the Fox|

Não sei se ainda alguém será capaz de se lembrar deste post sobre uns sapatinhos panda que fiz para oferecer à bebé de uns amigos. Alguém?! Pois bem, logo nesse post, menciono que também fiz um gato e uma raposa, mas nunca mais voltei a pegar neles, isto, até que se aproximou este último Natal e enquanto pensava em prendas para o meu sobrinho mais novo, lembrei-me que tinha estes dois pares por terminar. 

I don't know if anyone is able to remember this post about some baby panda shoes I made for a friends baby? Anyone?! Well, right back then, I mencioned I made three pairs of them, a cat and a fox too, but I haven't touch them again until this latest Christmas, when I was trying to find a gift for my youngest nephew, and remember I had these two unfinished. 

Acabei por lhe oferecer apenas um, este da raposinha, ao contrário do que planeava, mas com tudo o que Dezembro trouxe com ele, acabar este já foi uma sorte quanto mais terminar o outro par também. As horas livres foram todas contabilizadas. Os tecidos que usei para os fazer foram apenas pequenos retalhos que já tinha por casa, no futuro, se fizer outros gostava de experimentar com outro tipo de tecido para a sola, a napa tornou-se difícil de trabalhar numa peça tão pequena. 

Although I had plans to finish both pairs, I ended up finishing the fox pair only, with everything December brought with it all of our free time was counted. The fabrics I used were all small scraps I already had around, if I make another one in the future, I'd like to try a different fabric for the soles because leather turned out a little hard to work with in such a tiny piece. 

O molde dos sapatos, é o Wild Things Baby Shoes da Twig + Tale e são a coisa mais amorosa que já fiz no que toca a sapatos para pés pequeninos (e sim, já fiz alguns, embora não estejam todos neste blog). Vejam bem os detalhes: os olhos e o nariz do animal são bordados, e o facto de não terem boca dá-lhes aquele ar amoroso, não concordam? 

The pattern for the shoes is the Wild Things Baby Shoes by Twig + Tale and they are the sweetest things I have made when it comes to little feet shoes (and yes, I've made my share already although they aren't all on the blog). Just look at the details: the eyes and nose of the animal are embroidered, and having no mouth gives it such a cute look, don't you agree? 

Agora só me falta mesmo acabar o 3º par que ainda está encostado à espera e arranjar outro bebé a quem o dar. Podia dar ao meu sobrinho também, mas prefiro encontrar outro par de pequeninos para aquecer, e deixar outras coisas diferentes para o pequenino. Aquela orelhinha teimosa ali acima dobrou por estarem guardados tanto tempo e não houve forma de a endireitar. Não que eu tenha tentado muito, até lhe acho piada. 

Now I only need to finish the third pair and find another baby to gift it to. I could give it to my nephew as well, but I rather find another pair of little feet to warm with this, and leave other different pieces for him. That little stubborn ear above bended while it was kept away and there was no way to get it right. Not that I tried too hard anyway, I finf it kinda cute.

Uma das minhas cunhadas está grávida e pediu-me que lhe fizesse uma bolsinha em tecido para a primera roupinha do bebé. É um menino e vai chamar-se Iúri de Jesus. Sinceramente, não vou comentar o nome, o que diz muito sobre o que acho dele. 

One of my sisters in law is pregnant and asked me for a pouch for her baby's first clothes. It's a boy who they will name Iúri de Jesus, I will absent from comments, which says much of what I think about it. 

Mas pronto, essa foi a escolha dos pais e eu, como boa tia que sou, lá bordei o nome do rapaz a ponto cruz, coisa que não fazia havia anos. Fartei-me de fazer e desfazer. Fiz a maior parte já à noite com pouquíssima luz por preguiça de mudar de sítio, até que eventualmente acabei por fazê-lo. No entanto, continuei a fazer e desfazer por mais um bocado. Aliás, se prestarem bem atenção ainda ficou um erro que a mim me salta logo à vista, mas que já não tive coragem de desmanchar depois de tudo. 

Well, it's a parents choice anyway, and as a good aunt - which I am - I cross stitched the boy's name, which I haven't done for years. I did and undo so many times. Most of it I made at night with little light because I was lazy to move to another place; eventually I did though. Still, I kept making mistakes and unstitching for a little longer. Actually, there's an error if you pay attention, quite visible for me, but I wasn't brave enough to unpick it anymore. 

Comprei o tecido com as luas, estrelas e bolinhas numa loja local porque não tinha nada (clássico) adequado a um menino bebé. E como sei que o azul sempre foi uma das cores preferidas da mãe, fazia questão de fazer a peça em azul. Já o tecido do forro consegui tirar dos que já tinha por casa. A manta acrilica que tinha para o enchimento não era suficiente para o projecto que tem um tamanho A4 (mais ou menos), então usei uma manta polar para o efeito e resultou muito bem. 

I bought the moons, stars and dots fabric at a local shop because I didn't have anything (classic) baby boy appropriate in my stash. And since I know his mother's fave color has always been blue, I was sure to make it in this color. As for thr lining fabric, it came from my stash. I was running out of quilt batting so I used a piece of a fleece blanket instead and it worked just fine. 

A bolsa é bem simples, e como estava com preguiça de fazer o meu próprio molde procurei um que fosse grátis online e encontrei o pap do blog Alfacinha. Só vos queria chamar à atenção para algo, o molde que ela nos dá deve ser cortado na dobra do tecido, não me apercebi de ter visto essa informação em nenhum lado e é importante. Fiz uma versão simplificada e em vez de laços para abrir e fechar, optei por colocar duas molas kam. Já foi entregue e aprovadíssima pela mamã. 

It is quite simple to make, and since I was quite lazy to draw a pattern for this I searched online for a free one and found it at Alfacinha blog (it is in portuguese though - I am sure you can find an english version somewhere). I made it simpler than this one ans skipped the lace as closure, exchanging it for two kam snaps. It has been delivered and aproved by the mother.

Para quem mora nos Estados Unidos (pelo menos), o dia do pai está quase a chegar, aqui já sabemos que foi em Março, mas qualquer desculpa é boa para celebrar a parentalidade. E por isso, usei o os moldes Parker’s Vintage Fit T-Shirt for Children & Men, homem e criança (EYMM), e o meu primeiro pensamento foi fazer uma t-shirt para os meus filhos (menina e menino), mas depois olhando para trás, já fiz vários looks mãe e filha, por isso, reconsiderei e acheique também seria divertido fazer um look só pai e filho, e cheguei até isto. 

Father's Day is around the corner for US residents, at least. It already took place in March in my corner of the world, but I feel like any excuse is a good one when it comes to celebrate parentwood. And so I used the Parker’s Vintage Fit T-Shirt for Children & Men pattern bundle (EYMM) and my first thought was to match daddy and both kids (girl and boy), but then I looked back in time, I have made a few mommy and me looks in the past, with the girl. I thought it could be fun to make something just for the boys too, and here's what we got. 

Lancem-me lá uns fogos de artificio, faxavôre! Depois de tantos anos a dizer que queria e fazia, lá costurei qualquer coisa para o namorido (de roupa, isto é). Hurra!!! A motivação veio mesmo de fazer parte deste tour da EYMM Patterns, com o tema Papá & Eu. Por isso, sim, hoje fico feliz.

Someone throw some firework for me please! After so many years meaning to, I finally sewed something (on the garment department, it is) for the hubby. Hurray!!! And my motto was being on the Daddy & Me tour for EYMM Patterns. So, yes, I am happy today. 

Encomendei o meu tecido da Sweet Mercerie porque o esquesitinho do meu marido não gosta de nenhum dos tecidos que eu já tinha em casa. Comprei então esta malha jersey em azulão, e outra em bege, muito parecidas. Gosto muito de ver o meu V. (namorido) de azul, destaca com o cabelo muito preto e olhos castanhos muito escuros, por isso usei o azul como tecido principal da t-shirt dele, e usei um retalho do bege para o bolso na frente. Para o meu S. (filho) usei o bege como principal e o azul para o detalhe do bolso.

I ordered some fabric from The Sweet Mercerie, because my picky husband didn't like any of the fabric I had in my stash. So, I purchased an electric blue slub jersey and a beige with black speckled jersey fabrics. I really like to see V. (hubby) wearing blue, it stands out with his pretty black hair and dark brown eyes, so the blue was used as main fabric for his t-shirt, and I used a scrap from the beige fabric for the front pocket. For S. (son) I used the beige as main fabric and the blue for the pocket detail. 

Ambos os moldes, de homem e criança, foram bem fáceis montar, cortar e rápidos de costurar. Fiz o do miúdo, depois de tudo cortado, em menos de meia hora. Ambos vêm com duas opções de gola. Escolhi a gola em V porque, se bem me lembro, era algo que nunca tinha feito antes. A primeira foi a do V. e não correu assim tão bem, não ficou centrada a 100%. Acredito que a peça da gola deveria ser um pouco mais longa (ou então meu tecido nãp tinha os 60% recomendado, é verdade que como é bastante elástico eu nem fui confirmar), na minha opinião tive de esticar demasiado a gola. O mesmo não aconteceu com a versão mais pequena. Correu tudo perfeitamente. 

Patterns, both men and children's were easy to assemble, cut and pretty quick to sew. I made the kid's one in less than half an hour after I had everything cut. Both come with two collar options. I chose the V-neck option, which if I can remember well, I hadn't done ever before. The first was the hubby's and it is not 100% centered in the front. I think the collar piece should be a little longer (or my fabric didn't have the 60% stretch recommended in the pattern - mine is pretty stretchy so I didn't even check), I had to stretch the fabric way too much in my opinion. I didn't have the same issue with the boy's version. Everything went smoothly and it looks perfect. 

Já com os bolsos foi ao contrário. O do V. ficou muito melhor. Comecei por costurar o do S. com um ponto zigue zague, mas a máquina começou a repuxar o tecido e quando tentei descoser para voltar a coser, não consegui porque o tecido é fino e a tendência era rasgar.
Assim que acabei por tentar costurar o resto do bolso o melhor possível, e para o bolso do pai já usei um ponto direito. A minha sobrinha estava cá em casa quando terminei as duas t-shirts, e quando lhes mostrei a todos as peças ao acabar, a miúda de 8 anos ficou toda entusiasmada e até eufórica quando percebeu que tinha trocado os tecidos nos bolsos. Adorou! Também fiquei muito agradada. Assenta-lhes a ambos na perfeição.

The oposite happened with the pockets though. Hubby's look much better, I started by sewing the boy's with a zig zag stitch, but it started pulling the fabric which is so thick that it made it impossible to unpick to sew again. So I just tried to do it as best as I could and switched to a straight stitch when attaching the hubby's pocket. My niece was staying over when I finished the pieces and showed them to my family. She's 8 years old and was all excited, noticing the matching switched pockets. She loved it! I was very pleased too. The fit on both of them is pretty good and spot on. 

As opções para o comprimento das mangas são também, mas como temos o verão mesmo ai, optei por fazer as mangas curtas, claro. Cheira-me que vou usar este molde mais vezes. Se ao menos o dia tivesse mais horas.

There's also two options for the sleeves lenght, and because Summer is almost here, I went with the short ones, of course. I see more of these in our future. If only the day lasted a few more hours.

One Thimble Issue 11

Saiu ontem, a última edição da revista digital One Thimble, uma revista online australiana, que conta com imensas colaboradoras e designer super talentosas. Já conhecia a mesma, pois já me tinha cruzado com alguns moldes que fizeram parte de edições anteriores, mas nunca antes tinha tido a oportunidade de a ver do princípio ao fim como aconteceu com esta última edição. Fiquei fã. Assim que a recebi, comecei a ler página a página e fiquei muito surpreendida pela positiva, com o conteúdo da mesma. E acreditem que é muito e bom. Para começar, juntamente com a revista vêm 12 moldes PDF super interessantes. E digo super interessantes porque não se resumem apenas a moldes para peças de roupa, incluí também bonecos e sapatinhos para bebé, puzzles 3D em feltro, um quilt e esquemas para ponto cruz. Dentro dos moldes para roupa, a oferta consiste em roupa tanto para rapaz como rapariga e até um molde para mulher. Para além dos moldes, que por si só, já compensam o investimento na revista, a One Thimble não se resume apenas a eles, é muito mais. É uma verdadeira dedicação pela parte da sua editora, a Jen e de toda a sua equipa, que juntas prepararam e nos apresentam dicas muito úteis, e passo a passos para diversas técnicas. Fiquei muito feliz por me deparar com um artigo para quem se quer iniciar na reciclagem de roupa, já que é algo que a mim me diz muito. Outra coisa que despertou bastante a minha curiosidade, foram também os artigos direccionados a quem quer montar/gerir um pequeno negócio artesanal, com dicas para uma boa publicidade. A revista sai 4 vezes ao ano e o seu valor compensa em muito o material e qualidade.

The latest issue of the e-zine One Thimble,was launched yesterday. It is an online magazine from Australia, that puts together a lot of talented team of contributers and designers. I already knew One Thimble from previous patterns I came across that were part of this before, but it wasn't until now that I had the chance to read the entire magazine. I did now and I am already addicted. As soon as I got it, I started reading page after page and was quite (happily) surprised with its content. And believe me, it is good and quite a lot. For a start, the magazine comes with 12 super interesting PDF patterns. And I mean, super interesting because they're not only clothes patterns, there are baby's toys and shoes, 3D felt animal puzzles, a quilt and cross stitching patterns. Inside the clothes patterns, you find boy and girl options and even one women's pattern. Apart from the patterns, which by themselves alone are worth the magazine price, One Thimble is not at all just about the PDF patterns it includes. It is so much more than that. It is a true labor of love and dedication from its editor Jen, and all her team. Together they prepared and present to us pretty useful tips and tutorials. I was so happy to find a refashioning article for begginers, because, you know that speaks so much to me. Another thing that caught my attention deeply, was the Using Facebook groups for your creative business and the Marketing Do’s and Don’ts articles. This e-zine is out 4 times a year and the investment you make on it, is quite worth it. 

Há já umas boas semanas que andava desejando que esta edição saísse, não que já a tivesse visto, mas porque fiz parte do grupo de testers para um dos moldes incluídos na revista, a Upton Sweater da Momma Quail Patterns, e estava mortinha para poder mostrar, porque mais uma vez, a Amy criou um molde que eu adoro. Desenhado para rapazes, este molde é perfeito para color blocking que foi o que fiz. Usei o tamanho 2 anos para o meu S. Graças à abertura lateral com o fecho, e o facto de não ser extretamente justa ao corpo, faz com que esta camisola possa ser costurada em tecido ou em malha. Para este teste, eu usei flanela (o azul claro) e um tecido que não sei precisar bem qual, com pêlo macio no interior (azul escuro). A gola é assimétrica, fecha com botões ou molas na linha do fecho. No meu caso, usei molas Kam para facilitar na hora de vestir e despir este menino muito ativo. Outro atrativo desta camisola, são os bolsos e a forma como são construídos. O molde vai dos 12M aos 14 anos e dá para imensas combinações divertidas, ou mais neutras. Ah, e as calças, foram também de um teste para a Amy, mais precisamente as Just Chillin’ Sweats, que eu ainda não tinha publicado no blogue, e atenção, o molde não faz parte do lote dos 12 moldes incluídos na One Thimble #11. Mas fica super bem com a camisola, não fica? 

It's been weeks since I was wishing for this edition to come out, not that I had seen it back then, but because I was part of the testers group for one of the patterns in it. It was the Upton Sweater by Momma Quail Patterns, and I was dying to be able to share this with you, Amy did it again, creating a much loved pattern in my opinion. Designed for boys, this pattern is perfect for color blocking which is what I did. Imade a size 2 for my boy. Due to the zipper opening, and the fact that it is not supposed to be too tight, this can be sewed up either in a woven or knit fabric. For this test, I used flannel (light blue) and another fabric which I can't tell exactly what it is, but it's fury inside and quite soft (dark blue). The collar is asymetrical, and closes at the zipper line with buttons or Kam snaps. I went with the Kam snaps to help me out with this unstopable little boy of mine. Another feature from the sweater that I love are the pockets and the way they are built. This pattern goes from 12M to 14Y and you can surely play around with fun different combinations, or more neutral ones. Oh, and the pants he's wearing, they were also a test for Amy, the Just Chillin’ Sweats pattern, which I hadn't shared on the blog yet, and attention, these are not included in the One Thimble 11 pattern bundle. Although they look quite good with the sweater, don't they?

Depois do teste e mais recentemente, o primeiro que escolhi foi o Hoya Dress da Little Lizard King. Achava eu que o bom tempo tinha chegado e que estava na hora de andarmos de perninhas de fora, com a época dos vestidos ai, mas aparentemente a Primavera entendeu que afinal não, e fugiu. Parece Inverno outra vez. Por isso mesmo, tivemos que nos contentar com umas fotos dentro de casa mesmo, num dos raros momentos em que o sol brilhou. Entre a chuva a obrigar-me a tirar as fotos em casa, e esta miúda que não queria parar de saltar não sei o que foi pior.

After the test, the first pattern I picked to sew was the Hoya Dress by Little Lizard King. I was deceived to believe the good weather was here and it was time to wear our bare legs out, with the dress season around the corner, but alas, Spring thought otherwise and ran away. It looks like winter is back. Due to all this, we had to content ourselves with an indoor photoshoot, in a rare moment of sunlight. Between the non stop rainy days and the non stop jumping girl, I can't tell what was worse. 

O Hoya Dress é um molde simples, mas delicado ao mesmo tempo, com pequenos detalhes que o diferenciam. A parte superior é toda forrada, e a saia franzida na cintura, cria muita roda para as meninas princesas. Os bolsos grandes, têm uma forma engraçada, com a parte superior com um corte arredondado, são cosidos precisamente sobre as costuras laterais da saia. O vestido fecha à frente com botões, no meu caso substituídos por molas Kam, por pura preguiça de fazer casas de botões, uma vez que as últimas peças que fiz antes desta, mantiveram-me bastante ocupada nesse departamento. A tapar as costuras nos ombros, presilhas feitas em tecido contrastante dão mais um ar de graça ao vestido. No molde, a indicação é de coser um botão nas presilhas, eu é que como usei as Kam, achei que botões diferentes depois não ficavam ali nada bem. Outro detalhe que pode ser incluído no vestido, mas que eu saltei à frente porque a minha princesa não gosta nada de usar, é um cinto, com ou sem um lacinho a decorar. Os tecidos que usei, são de algodão, o principal, com flores, foi oferta de uma querida amiga, e que usei a 100% para este projeto... mais  uma das muitas que me enviou e que tenho vindo a mencionar em várias publicações. O rosa com as pequenas bolinhas brancas, foi um retalho que tinha por casa (da coleção dos tecidos Tilda).

The Hoya dress is a simple pattern, although delicate at the same time, with little details that make it stand out from other similars. The bodice is fully lined and the skrt is gathered at the waist, with a lot of twirl factor for the princess girls. The big pockets, with a fun curved shape, is sewn right on top of the skirt side seams. It is a button down dress, in mine I changed the buttons for Kam snaps, purely because my latest previous projects got me doing a lot of button holes and I felt kinda lazy to do some more. Cover the shoulder seams there's a loop, on the tutorial with a button on it too, but because I used the Kam's I didn't think a button would look good there, so I skipped it and just added simple loops. Another detail for the dress that I have skipped because I know my daughter doesn't like at all, is a belt, with or without a cute little bow. The fabrics I used are both cotton, the flowerly main one was yet another gift from the ones a dear friend sent me, and which I used 100% of for this project... The little polka dots pink fabric, was just a scrap from my stash (it's from Tilda's fabric colection). 

O último molde que já experimentei e que tenho para vos mostrar hoje, é o Wild Things Baby Shoes, da Big Little Patterns. Isso mesmo, sapatinhos de bebé, para pés pequeninos. É impossível não querer costurar um par deles, são adoráveis com as suas orelhinhas espetadas, nos vários animais disponíveis - sete ao todo. Eu escolhi o panda (fiz também o gato e a raposa mas preciso de terminar uns detalhes), de entre os tamanhos 1-5 (0-3M - 12-18M) eu fiz o tamanho 2, para uma pequena (e é mesmo muito pequenina) guerreira que (se não me engano) nasceu cerca de quatro meses antes do esperado. Os papás mudaram-se para longe antes dela nascer, por isso, os meus sapatinhos já seguiram viagem até à Escócia. Fazem uma prenda para bebé tão bonita que só me apetece fazer um par de cada animal para todos os bebés à minha volta, os que já nasceram e os que estão para nascer. Infelizmente ao meu rapazito já não entram.

The last pattern I have tried by now from One Thimble, is the Wild Things Baby Shoes by Big Little Patterns. That's right, cute baby shoes for little feet. It is impossible to resist sewing a pair of these, they are absolutely adorable, with the cute ears standing, in the different animals available - there are a total of seven options. I did the panda (I also did the cat and the fox but still need to finish them), in size 2 from the available range 1-5 (0-3M to 12-18M), and I made these for a little warrior girl (and she's very little indeed) who was born (if I'm not wrong) about four months before her due date. Her parents moved away way before she was born, so, my little shoes took a nice trip to Scotland to meet her little feet. These are such a cute baby gift, it makes me feel like sewing a pair of each aninal option for all the born and unborn yet babies around me. Sadly my boy's feet don't fit these anymore. 

São tantos os moldes que quero experimentar deste número 11 que está a ser dificil escolher qual o primeiro a seguir. Estou dividida entre o Rainbow Wild Animal ponto cruz da Hugs Are Fun e o Marty Hoodie da Ainslee Fox. Estou mais inclinada para o ponto cruz para já, uma vez que é algo que tenho de certa forma, meio esquecido.

I really want to try most of the patterns available in this Issue 11, the hard part is to decide which one to do next. I am divided between the Rainbow Wild Animal Cross Stitch by Hugs Are Fun and the Marty Hoodie by Ainslee Fox. I think I might start with the cross stitch though, since it is something I don't do for such a long time.

Walker Jeans by Momma Quail Patterns

Na passada segunda feira, a Momma Quail Patterns, lançou o seu último molde, Walker Jeans, que eu tive o prazer de testar... Sim, sim, quero reduzir os testes aos moldes e tal e coiso, mas a verdade é que até me tenho portado bem. Mas o que hei-de eu fazer? Sempre que vejo os tester calls da Amy, lá vou eu, não lhes consigo virar costas. E desta vez, foi o desenho destas calças, na opção que acabei por fazer que me chamou a atenção. O molde vem com duas opção de corte, a primeira a calça direita e a segunda ligeiramente afunilada nos joelhos, e depois novamente mais larga em baixo, tipo boca de sino, mas pouco acentuado. Claro que há também a opção de fazer calções e ainda incluí linhas de corte para ajustar o comprimento - já que é mais para o longo, dando espaço para os períodos de crescimento veloz a que os nossos pequenos estão sujeitos. No caso do meu pequenino, que é curto de perna, os moldes da Amy são mesmo longos, mas de resto assentam na perfeição. Este molde, como a maioria dos moldes desta designer, é mais direcionado para os meninos, embora também inclua nas instruções, a versão menina para a aplicação do fecho e braguilha. Começa no tamanho 12M e vai até ao tamanho 14. O meu miúdo ficou com um ar mesmo cool. Infelizmente estava demasiado frio e não lhe tirei o casaco, mas por baixo vestia esta camisola que lhe fiz no ano passado (e sim, ainda serve). Até o pai estava super orgulhoso, uma vez que ambas as peças, foram recicladas e feitas a partir de roupas do pai. O miúdo também parece ter aprovado as calças novas, correu, pulou, saltou, rebolou na areia, trepou e nunca se queixou.

Last monday, Momma Quail Patterns had released her lattest pattern, the Walker Jeans... Yes, yes, I want to reduce the number of pattern tests and all that, but the truth's that I've been behaving quite well. What I can do though? Everytime I come across one of Amy's tests, there I go, I just can't turn my back to it. This time, I was drawn by the bootleg option of these jeans. The pattern comes with two options, the first one is a straight leg and then the bootleg, there's also the possibility of making shorts versions too, including cutting lines to adjust height - the pattern height is a bit long, adding room to grow, good for our always growing fast kids. In the case of my little one, Amy's patterns are often too long because he's quite short legged, but other than that, the pattern fits perfectly elsewhere. This pattern, as most patterns from the designer, are meant for boys, even though, this includes girl fly and zipper directions/instructions. It starts at 12M size and goes up to size14. My little boy looks really cool in his jeans. Unfortunately it was too cold and I didn't take his hoodie off for the photos, but he was wearing this shirt I made him last year (and yes, still fits). Even dad was feeling all proud, since both pieces I made, were refashioned from his own clothes. The boy seemed to approved his new jeans as well, he ran, jumped, rolled in the sand, climbed and never complained.

Parece que hoje é o último dia, eu, juntamente com a Inês, encerramos os 15 dias de comemoração do aniversário da revista finlandesa Ottobre design! Não estão a entender do que falo? Não seja por isso, passo já a explicar. 15 amigas bloggers e todas portuguesas, ficámos ultra doidinhas quando soubemos que a revista acima referida já se encontrava à venda no nosso país. A Marta lançou o mote e nós seguimos atrás... os 15 anos da Ottobre foram a desculpa perfeita para a tour sair à rua. Começou no dia 15 de Outubro, claro, e como já referi conta com 15 bloggers. It looks like it is the last day, together with Inês, I am closing the 15 days celebrating the Finn magazine Ottobre designs anniversary. Are you a bit lost? I'll enlight you. 15 portuguese friends and bloggers, went really out of our minds when we realised the magazine was selling in our country too. Marta had the idea and we just followed... the 15 years of Ottobre were just the perfect excuse to finally have this tour. It started October 15th, and of course, with 15 bloggers as I mentioned above. You can see all the posts from previous days by clicking the links above. 

Quando pensei na tour, não imaginei que fosse ter tanto sucesso, nem que a própria Ottobre seria nossa patrocinadora, mas as coisas foram evoluindo e assim aconteceu. Como de início pensei que fosse uma coisa mais pequena, não me preocupei muito com o que ia fazer, folheei as 3 edições que tenho, e escolhi fazer um pijama para o meu filhote, porque para esta altura em que ainda não faz muito frio, não tinha muitos.

When I thougth about this tour, I didn't imagine it would be so successful, neither did I image that Ottobre itself would sponser us, but things went that way. Since I thought it'd be a smaller thing at first, I didn't care much for what to do, I went through the 3 edition I had and chose to make a pajama for my boy, because it's not warm but not too cold yet, and he didn't have many for this season

Claro que tentar fotografar o piolho de um ano foi um bocadinho frustrante, por isso acabei por desistir.

Of course, trying to photograph this little fellow was really frustrating, so I just gave up.

O molde foi o Lullaby Bird, nº1, (tamanho 86cm) da revista 6/2014, que foi também a primeira edição que adquiri (obrigado Rita!). Fica bem no corpo ao meu filho, mas como o rapaz é curto de membros, sobra muita manga e perna. O que também não faz mal nenhum, assim dura mais tempo. Usei um tecido barato que tinha por casa há algum tempo, é uma malha fina mas não sei precisar qual. O viés em verde foi feito em casa e usei restos de uma reciclagem de há uns meses atrás.

The pattern was the Lullaby Bird, number 1 (86cm size) from the 6/2014 edition, which was also the first one I got (thank you Rita!). It looks good on my boy's body but it's too long for legs and arms, there's a lot of fabric left. Which is ok anyway, it lasts longer. I used a cheap fabric that I had in my stash for a while, it's a thin knit but I can tell which. The bias tape was homemade and I used scraps from a previous refashion to make it. 

A vantagem de ser uma das últimas neste caso, foi ver as peças maravilhosas que foram surgindo em cada um dos blogs das minhas colegas. E claro, bateu aqui uma vergonha interna daquilo que eu tinha feito para apresentar nesta tour. Então fiquei toda feliz por estar no último dia, isso significava mais tempo para fazer algo de maior conformidade e estar pelo menos perto da qualidade delas (hehe).

The great thing about being in the last day of the tour, in this case, was being able to see all the great things my friends were sharing. And of course, I felt a little ashamed of what I had to post for the tour. I was super happy that I still had time to make something better though, so I could at least get closer to their quality (hehe). 

Ainda assim não fiz grandes planos, felizmente os meus filhos estão com muita roupa para a próxima estação, precisam apenas de uma ou outra peça, e foi a pensar nisso que cosi umas calças de treino para ela. Obviamente reciclei peças que já estavam na pilha para esse propósito (ou não seria eu!!). Uma t-shirt minha e uma do pai (que já tinha mostrado no podcast, para quem não viu, fica aqui), e ainda mais restos de punhos e cós que tinha tirado de uns casacos há tempos atrás.

Even though, I didn't make any huge plans, fortunately my kids have plenty enough clothes for the next season, they only need one or two pieces, and it wasa thinking of this that I went for some joggers for her. Obviously I refashioned pieces that were in the pile already (or it wouldn't be be!!). I used a t-shirt from me, and one from dad, and a few leftovers from rib knit I had saved froma few hoodies in the past. 

Usei o molde nº 26, Hop and Jump da edição 1/2015. Na tabela de medidas da Ottobre a minha filha veste um 92cm, mas eu optei pelo intermédio entre o que a tabela me diz, e a altura dela, por isso fiz de 98cm. Deois de as ver nela, achei que devia ter ajustado para a altura dela, os 104cm. Usei a frente da minha camisa para fazer a frente das calças e também o encaixe para o cordão. Usei a parte de trás da camisa do pai para a parte de trás das calças e para os bolsos. Na cintura e nos punhos usei a malha canelada que reaproveitei. O cordão fazia parte do meu acumulado de cordões.

I used pattern number 26, Hop and Jump from the 1/2015 edition. My daughter fits a 92cm according to Ottobre's measurement charts, but I went with the middle size between that and her actual height, so I used the 98cm. After seeing it on her, I thought I should have adjusted instead, and add the 104cm lenght to it. I used my shirt's front for the front and waist of the joggers, and I used dad's shirt for the back and pockets. In the waist band and leg bands I used the rib knit I recycled. The cord was in my stash too. 

Ainda tirei o pó à corta e cose, e consegui sem ajuda de ninguém enfiar as (4) linhas por completo, mas depois a linha partia sempre que tentava usar aquilo, e por levar horas a enfiar linhas ingratas, acabei por usar a minha máquina normal. Como não tem muitos pontos inventei, na hora de pespontar as partes visíveis, na cintura e nos bolsos. Nos punhos, fiz a montagem de forma diferente das indicações da revista por pura preguicite aguda, mas de resto foi costurado tal qual. As instruções da Ottobre podem ser um bocadinho intimidadoras para quem não está habituado a determinados termos (e ainda mais se estão a usar a versão espanhola, que é a que costumo encontrar sempre por cá, até mesmo eu que sou fluente na língua me deparo por vezes com terminologias que desconheço e vou por intuição).

I dusted my overlock, and I was able to thread it (4) completely, but the it just kept breaking everytime I tried to use it, and since it was taking me a lot of time (which I didn't have), I just gave up and used my regular sewing machine instead. Since it doesn't have a lot of decorative stitches I just went with what I had trying to get creative, in the waistline and pockets. I sewed it differently from the instructions in the leg bands but all the rest I did according to those. Ottobre's instructions are not for the newbies for sure, they can scare you out with unknow terminology (it gets even harder when you are using the spanish edition which is the one I find over here, even for a spanish fluent person as myself, sometimes I just go by intuition). 

Quando pensei nas fotos para esta publicação, pensei em algo simples, algo que ficasse bem com as calças mas que não fosse pesado. Ainda ponderei em fazer uma camisola em preto, mas achei que as calças já eram escuras o suficiente, até para mim que gosto de ver os miúdos com preto também, afinal é apenas uma cor. Gosto de miúdos com ar de crescidos, mas confortáveis - e esse é um dos grandes pontos fortes do molde da Ottobre, são pensados para que os miúdos possam ser isso mesmo, miúdos, que correm, saltam e brincam à vontade. Depois pensei em fazer uma camisola branca, mas lembrei-me que tinha comprado uns meses antes uma t-shirt baratinha para um projeto, mas que nunca foi usada. Assim que peguei nela, e atualizai-a um pouco, adicionando a pegada de leopardo para casar bem com as calças) e dei-me por satisfeita. Brevemente falarei mais sobre a mesma, e como fazer a aplicação com um pequeno passo a passo.

When I thought about the photos for this post, I wanted something simple, that coul go with the pants but were not too heavy. I considered making a black shirt for her, but the look was dark enough, even for my own taste, I like to see kids wearing black, after all it's just a color. I like to see kids with a gorwn up look, though comfortable too - and that is a major thing about Ottobre's patterns, they are thought in order to have kids being, well, kids, jumping and playing around comfortably. Then I thought about making a white shirt, buy it came to my mind that I had bought a cheap t-shirt a while ago for another project, but had never been used after all. I grabbed that one, and upcycled it by adding a leopard paw print to match the pants and called it a day. Soon I will blog about that said shirt, with a quick tutorial on how to do the applique.
