American Doll Clothes

As American dolls não são muito conhecidas por nós, mas nos Estados Unidos são bastante queridas entre as meninas, existindo até cafés temáticos, onde tudo é pensado ao pormenor. Há uns dias, recebi uma mensagem de uma mãe que me pedia um vestido para a boneca da filha. Para além do vestido acabei por fazer mais 3 peças: 1 top, 1 leggings e 1 túnica. Para todas as peças usei moldes grátis que encontrei depois de uma pesquisa. Aqui podem encontrar várias opções. 

American dolls are pretty known in the US but not so much over here, so I was a bit surprised (in a good way) when I got a request for an american doll dress. Besides the dress I ended up making 3 pieces: 1 top, 1 leggings and 1 tunic. For all the pieces I used free online patterns that I found. Find different options for more here.

Comecemos pela túnica. A intenção era fazer um vestido, mas não sabia a altura que cortar já que não tinha a boneca comigo. Calculei mais ou menos onde deveria cortar mas ainda assim achei que ia ficar curto, por isso, passou a túnica e pronto. A gola ficou estranha. Fazer roupas pequeninas por vezes tem as suas dificuldades. 

Let's start with the tunic. The idea was to make a dress, but I didn't know how long I should cut the skirt because I didn't have the doll with me. I knew it'd be too short , so a tunic it is. The collar's a bit odd. Making tiny clothes comes with difficulties sometimes.

Depois o vestido, que foi o que me pediram. A parte de cima é forrada (a cetim rosa neste caso) e para o fecho nas costas, aproveitei um reciclado de outra peça que terá acabado transformada ou no lixo anteriormente. O tecido exterior foi-me doado por uma amiga. Este foi o que mais gostei de costurar. 

After I made the dress, which was the one thing I was asked for. The top is completely lined (with a pink satin) and for the back zipper I used a recycled one from a previous refashioned or trashed piece. The main fabric had been given to me by a friend. This was the one I liked best.

Gostava de partilhar convosco o link para o molde das leggings mas já procurei várias vezes e não o encontro. Foi a costura "mais descuidada" de todas por esta malha é muito leve e trabalhá-la assim em ponto pequeno exigia uma paciência que eu não tinha no momento. Pensei em não oferecer esta à menina, mas depois imaginei que ela não iria reparar muito se as costuras estariam direitas ou tortas. Isso sim, era mais uma peça de roupa para vestir e despir as suas bonecas. 

I'd really like to share the leggings pattern link too but I seriously can't find it. I've looked for it several times and nothing. This was the "less cared" sew of all because this knit is very light and working it on a tiny piece called for a lot of patience which I didn't have at the moment. I thought about not giving this one away, but then I thought twice, the little girl wouldn't care for bad seams anyway, instead, I'm sure she'd rather have another garment to put on and off on her dolls. 

Já o halter top foi a minha segunda preferida. Isto no meu tamanho até era coisa para eu gostar e usar bastante. hehehe Este está também todo forrado com tecido de um lençol branco. 

As for the halter top, it was my second fave. This in my size and I would wear it and like it a lot. hehehe. This one is also fully lined with a white sheet fabric.

Playing with dolls

Esta é uma das Barbies da minha filha. Comprei-a há um par de meses atrás numa feira de velharias. Poderia ter sido para mim, mas desta vez não, foi mesmo para ela. A boneca vinha com um vestido rosa  choque, tipo princesa, mas horroroso. 

This is one of my daughter's Barbies. I thrifter it a few months ago. It could be mine, but not this time, I really bought it for her. The doll came with a not flattering, princess look, hot pink dress. 

Um dia destes, há coisa de um mês, dei com ela toda despida, enquanto arrumávamos os brinquedos e nem pensei duas vezes. Fui a caminho dos últimos retalhos que sobravam pelo meu quarto de costura, e sem um plano ou sem um molde sequer, meti mãos no tecido, na tesoura e na linha e agulha e a boneca ganhou uma nova vida e um look bem mais moderno. 

One of these days, as we were putting toys away, I found the doll, naked, and I didnt have to think twice. I grabbed the lattest scraps I had in my craft room, and without a plan or pattern, I got my fabric, scissors and needle and thread, and this doll got a new life and a pretty much modern look. 

Comecei pelo top. Recortei um circulo, no meio recortei um mais pequeno para passar na cabeça da Barbie. Depois fiz uma pequena bainha toda à volta, e para finalizar, fiz duas costuras para criar uma espécie de mangas. Foi tudo costurado à mão, para matar saudades do tempo em que essa era a única forma que eu tinha de costurar. E porque soube bem, costurar de sofá, com os meus miúdos por perto. O tecido é o que usei nos vestidos mãe & filha, aqui. 

I started with the top. To make it, I cut a circle with a smaller one in the middle, so I could get the doll's head through it. Then I hemmed it all around, and added two rows of stitches to create a sort of sleeves. Everything was hand sewn, to go back to the time when handsewing was the only way I had to sew anyway. And it felt good to just take everything into my couch and stay there with the kids around. The fabric I used, is the same one from the mom & daughter dresses, here. 

Depois passei para as calças. Cortei tudo a olho e fiquei super satisfeita com o resultado porque ficaram mesmo, o tamanho perfeito para a boneca. As calças são compostas de 5 peças: duas frentes, duas traseiras e cós da cintura. Em baixo têm também uma pequena bainha, mais uma vez, tudo costurado à mão. O tecido é o mesmo que usei para fazer o meu 2º par de M is for Motto Joggers, que cortei mas que ainda não terminei. 

Then I made the pants. I've cut it by eye and I was super happy with how they turned out because they were really, the perfect size for the doll. The pants are made out of 5 pieces: two front, two back and a waist band. I made a small hem on the legs bottom, and again, everything was hand sewn. The fabric is the one I used to make my second pair of M is for Motto Joggers, which I haven't sewn together yet.

Mais uma pattern tour aqui neste cantinho. Normalmente sinto-me sempre feliz e agradecida por cada uma delas, mas confesso que neste caso, sinto-me muito orgulhosa da designer em causa. A pattern tour de hoje, é organizada pela Amy McDonald, e ela é a criadora por detrás dos moldes Momma Quail Patterns. Eu testei o que foi o primeiro molde dela (aqui) e fiquei muito bem impressionada, colocando-a de imediato na minha lista de preferidas. Fiquei muito feliz mesmo quando soube da tour e claro que me candidatei também. A Amy tem 12 moldes disponíveis, e entre eles, está esta pasta que ela criou porque o seu filho de 3 anos adora a pasta do avô. Escolhi este, porque o Natal é já daqui a umas semanas, e para quem gosta de fazer as suas prendas, o tempo começa a apertar, assim, que unindo o útil ao agradável, decidi transformar estas pastas, tão masculinas, em malas para meninas, mais precisamente, malas para as meninas transportarem as suas Barbies ou outras. Fui, inspirada pela minha filha, que pediu uma Barbie rock star para o Natal (tem de ser a do cabelo azul, mamã - diz ela. Tratado!). 

Another pattern tour here. I usually am always happy and glad for each of them, but I have to congfess that in this case, I am feeling really proud for the designer. Today's pattern tour is organized by Amy McDonald, and she's the designer behind Momma Quail Patterns. I've tested what was her first pattern (here) and I was quite impressed, putting her in my top designers. I was really happy when I read about the tour and of course, I signed for it as well. Amy has  12 available patterns, and from those, there's this briefcase she created for her 3 year old who loves his grandpa briefcase. I picked this one, because Christmas is just in a few weeks, and if just like me you enjoy making your gifts, you know that there's not much time left right? So, why not make it count and make a couple of gifts all along? I turned this masculine briefcases into pretty girly ones, mostly for girls to carry their Barbies and similars all around. This was inspired by my daughter, she asked for a Rock Star Barbie for Christmas too (It has to be the one with the blue hair mom! - she says. Taken care of!). 

Nesta publicação tenho apenas duas para vos mostrar, mas comecei a fazer três ao mesmo tempo. Usei o mesmo tecido para todas, a única alteração de uma para as outras é a aplicação da boneca na parte exterior. Cada uma foi feita com uma cor/tecido diferentes. A terceira não tive tempo de terminar, pois embora as instruções sejam muito boas, devido a uma pequena falha no meu inglês, cometi um erro que só vim a descobrir muito mais tarde, depois de horas e horas a costurar - porque estava a fazer as 3 ao mesmo tempo - e tive que desmanchar tudo, tudinho!!! aunffff fiquei tão desanimada, que depois só continuei com uma. E quando a terminei, animei-me outra vez, era tão mais fácil do que o que eu tinha inventado, e depois disso, correu tão bem, que agarrei-me novamente às outras duas, mas acabei por terminar só uma, uma vez que a G. ficou doente e fiquei sem tempo de terminar todas. Facto: as fitas na mala com a aplicação rosa, serviram para tapar um corte acidental que fiz na peça. 

In this post, I only have two briefcases to show you, but in fact they were three when I started. I used the same fabric for all of them, the only exception was the appliqué I used on the outside of each. I used adifferent fabric/color for each. I had no time to finish the third one, because although the instructions are easy to follow, I had an issue with the language which led me to a huge mistake, and I only noticed that after many hours of sewing - remember I was sewing all three at the same time - and I had to unpick it all. aunffff I was so depressed about it, that I only continued with one. When I was done, I was into it again, it was so much easier than what I made it up, and after fixing it it went so smoothly that I went back to the other two. Time was short though, and I knew I wouldn't be able to finish both, especially because G. got sick, so I only finished one more. Fact: the bands on the pink applique briefcase, were there to cover up an accidental cut I made into the piece. 

No molde as opções de bolsos interiores, são um grande para um livro, um mais pequeno para lápis de cor/feltros ou lápis de cera de um lado, e este último alterei, criando apenas duas bolsas, para as meninas guardarem as roupas das bonecas por exemplo. E do outro lado, um bolso com uma janela que permite ver o seu interior, fechado com um fecho (perfeito para guardar as peças mais pequenas como os sapatos, malas, etc). 

In the pattern, you find a book pocket inside, a pencil or crayons pocket, and this lattest one was the only one I changed, creating just two pockets so girls can keep their doll's clothes, for example. In the other side, there's like a window pocket, closed with a zipper that allows to see what's inside (perfect to keep smaller pieces, like doll's shoes, bags, etc).

Easter Bunny

A Páscoa já está aqui! Se precisarem de um projeto de última hora, aqui está um também. Este ano, no infantário da G. foi-nos pedido que fizessemos um coelhinho da Páscoa. O ano passado fizemos um ovo, e eu não fiquei muito feliz com a nossa criação de última hora. Este ano correu melhor, eu já tinha uma ideia do que queria e o sr. google ajudou-me a concretizá-la. Comprei os materiais* que me faltavam e estava pronta a seguir.

Easter is here! if you need a quick, last minute craft, here it is too. This year, G.'s daycare teachers asked us to make a bunny for homework. Last year we had to make an Easter egg and I wasn't really happy with our last minute creation. This year went better, I already had an idea of what I wanted and mr. google just helped me achieving it. I bought the supplies* I didn't have at home, and was ready to go. 

Não tirei fotos do processo. Na altura nem me lembrei, nem tinha tempo, já que o coelhinho tinha que ser entregue na manhã seguinte (e foi feito à noite). Por isso, experimentei fazer algo novo aqui no blog. Um passo a passo com ilustrações feitas por mim... Já me dirão de vossa justiça e se ficou capaz ou não.

I didn't take photos through the process. At the time I didn't even remember to, nor did I have the time since it should be delivered the next morning, (and I crafted it in the evening). Because of that, I am trying something new here in the blog. A tutorial with illustrations drawn by me... You will tell me if they are ok and if they're good or not. 

Usei:
*1&2. 2 bolas de esferovite de tamanhos diferentes
3: uma base de esferovite
4. lã
5. palitos
6. olhos de plástico
7. pedaço de feltro branco
8. pedaço de feltro rosa
9. fita
10. collants velhos

11. caixa de cartão
12. arame muito fino

I used: 
*1&2. 2 sizes styrofoam balls
3: styrofoam base
4. woolen thread
5. toothpicks
6. plastic eyes
7. white piece of felt
8. pink piece of felt
9. ribbon
10. old tights

11.. cardbox  12. very thin wire

Antes de começar cortar as formas em feltro. Usar o branco para cortar os dentes, e para cortar rectângulo arredondado para a barriga.
1. cortar um pé da meia 2.coser a base 3. enfiar a bola maior, apertar com uma linha para fechar, enfiar a bola mais pequena, voltar a apertar com uma linha para fechar 4. cortar duas orelhas na perna que sobra da meia 5. passar arame à volta de cada orelha para moldar 6. colar os olhos em 1º lugar 7. depois os dentes 8. e o nariz sobrepondo os dentes (colar a barriga do coelho também - sem imagem) 9.cortar um circulo no cartão (mais pequeno que a bola menor), no interior desenhar outro circulo mais pequeno e cortar formando um buraco - cortar outro igual 10. enrolar a lã toda a à volta do cartão 11. abrir ligeiramente para ver o cartão 12. enfiar a ponta da tesoura para separar os dois cartões e cortar tudo à volta 13. passar uma linha/lã 14. dar a volta com a linha e atar firmemente 15. retirar o cartão e o pompom está feito 16. colar o pompom na parte de trás da bola grande 17. enfiar quatro palitos na base e na parte de baixo do coelho para que se mantenha de pé, e pronto, já está!

Before you start, cut you felt shapes. Use the white for the teeth and cut also a circular rectangle shape for the belly. 
1. cut a tight foot 2. sew the base 3. pass the bigger ball through, tight a thread around it to close it, pass the smaller ball through and close again 4. cut the ears shapes from the rest of the tight leg 5. use a thin wire all around the ears to give it shape 6. glue the eyes first 7. then the teeth 8. and finally the nose (glue the belly too - no images) 9. cut a small circle in the cardbox (smaller then the head ball), and cut another circle hole in the middle - make it two. 10. wrap the wool thread around the cardbox 11. open a little through the thread in order to be able to see your cardbox underneath 12. get your scissors tip into both cardbox circles and cut the thread all around 13. pass a thread through the one you've cutted 14. get it all around and tight strongly 15. take the cardbox out and your pompom is ready 16. glue the pompom into the back of the bigger ball 17. stick the 4 tooth through the base and the rabbit bottom so it can stand, and you're done!
