The Janie Dress & The Glacier Vest

After showing you all the pieces I made for the Back to School tour, a total of nine that you can see here, it is time to start showing you the details of each of them, and I couldn't start for no other than my girl's favorite. How not? Who wouldn't love a dress with a never ending twirl factor?

Molde/PatternThe Janie Dress

Tamanho/Size: 6
Tecido/FabricThe Sweet Mercerie (principal/main)

I picked the fabric from my stash, in order for it to match the fur from my mom's coat that I used to make the Glacier vest, we'll be there in a moment. Let's focus on the dress right now. It was love at first sight - for me - when I saw this pattern, as I was choosing which patterns I'd pick from our generous sponsors. I knew my girl would love it too, and she had a word on the options choices.

The pattern comes with three sleeves options: short, long and 3/4. Since the idea was to make her more wintery clothes since summer is gone now, I went with the long option. The skirt has also three different options: regular circle skirt, a gathered circle skirt, or a peplum. And the neckline has 4 different options: a basic neckline, a cowl, a ballet scoop back, and a peter pan collar, which was my daughter's choice.

Just check other Janie dresses, it's such a versatile pattern and all the versions I've seen are so beautiful and look so sweet on all the girls. I so want to make one in each version, and mixed them all up. I know I probably won't make them all, I tend to repeat patterns very seldomly, but I sure want to make at least one or two with different options. If you have a girl fitting between sizes 6M and 12Y then you need this pattern in your stash. And here between us, wasn't the vest and the dress a match made in heaven?

Molde/Pattern: The Glacier Vest
Designer: Gracious Threads
Tamanho/Size: 6
Tecido/Fabric: Reciclado de um casaco de pele vintage / Refashioned from old vintage coat
(forro/lining: oferecido por uma leitora do blog / sent to me by a reader)

Acima: antes e depois
Above: before and after

It is impossible not to love this vest. Am I or am I not right? It must have been the first pattern I picked as I was checking what designers were sponsoring the tour. And this because I had this vintage coat from my mom's, and that she might have wore once or twice in her life. It was a gift my dad brought her fromGermany when I was so little. It ended on my refashion pile when she got bored of having it hanging there, and I had plans to turn it into a vest for myself and one for my girl since then. The opportunity to do so never came though, until now.

The lining fabric, which I believe to be a very light cotton one, was sent to me by a reader last year, with a bunch of other pieces, which I have mentioned before in other posts. It is beautiful, isn't it? Two little scraps of leather hold the button cord and the button itself was saved from a piece that was sent to trash.

The pattern comes in sizes 2-12Y and has two different options, the difference between them is how they close on the front. One is this I used and the other one is the one with a ribbon. Is it or is it not one piece every little girl needs in her wardrobe?

Back To School Blog Tour

Scroll down for english, please.

Faço parte do Back to School (Regresso às aulas) blog tour organizado por Lulu & Celeste and Sprouting Jube Jube Productions - estas meninas são imparáveis. A sério, mostrem-lhes algum amor.

I can't believe I can finally show you all the things I've been sewing for the last few weeks. I have been keeping it a secret but was here dying to tell you all about it. I am taking part of the Back to School Tour hosted by Lulu & Celeste and Sprouting Jube Jube Productions - seriously, these ladies are unstopable. This tour was sponsored by a group of wonderful sponsors, a few of them were knew to me, but I had sewn with patterns from most. Seriously, show some love to our sponsors

I sewed up a total of 9 pieces for this tour. My first idea was to sew my girl a little capsule wardrobe, with a few coordinating pieces. I did make most of the clothes for her, but I couldn't get them to be that coordinating since I am trying to use what I already have - I have moving plans and need to downsize on my stash, so doing my best to avoid buying more is mandatory right now. I won't go into big details about any of the pieces today, you'll have to come back the next few days to read more about each one of them. I decided to it so, because there are too many pieces for one post. Breaking it into a few different ones turns it a little less boring, I guess.

As I was saying, I had a hard time keeping all the pieces coordinating to each other. I also thought it was unfair to sew only for her, although deep down I know he doesn't need as many new clothes as she does... yes, we still have lots of hand-me-downs for him, but not so much for her anymore. I planed 3 pieces for him, but unfortunately I wasn't able to finish the 3rd for this post. I will try to show you all in the same order I made them. The first one was a pyjamas for my boy.

And guess what? I just realised that the picture above is wrong, I don't have 2 refashion pieces, I do have 3... oh this little head of mine!
Anyway... The 10th piece which I was not able to finish in time for today, was the Marc Shirt, a pattern by Filles à Maman that I once made for my boy. Back then it became one of our favorites, I thought it was about time to give it a try again. Pretty soon, I guess.

Aproveitem!

Just look at how many people are taking part on this tour? So much inspiration for you, so don't miss anyone, there are pretty cool things out there. Enjoy!

Refashion Month with Sew Thrifty

So sorry for the late posting today, we have been having some technical problems to post this, but here it is, and quickly we  have reached the last day of the month, the last day of this year's series too. To finish this roll of great inspiration bloggers I have the perfect guest for the job, Dana, from Sew Thrifty. Just a few days ago, I had the pleasure to be part of her series on how to save while sewing and I loved that so much, because you know, that's what I am always trying to do. Check out her blog for a lot of upcycling ideas.

***

Hello, my name is Dana, and I sew and save over at Sew Thrifty. I've just finished off a month of amazing thrifty sewing tips and refashioning is one of many routes I take to save money while sewing. Today I'm excited to share the first look at a wedding outfit I refashioned for my son!

My brother's wedding was just over 2 weeks ago and I knew for several months that I wanted to sew all the outfits for my family for the event. And, why not upcycle and use free patterns for everything too, right? Well, I was able to accomplish most of that. The pattern for my dress was free, the fabric for my daughter's dress and headband were free, and I found a dress that worked perfectly for my baby so I didn't have to sew anything for her. But today, I'm focusing on my boy. We don't get dressed up much at all, so this wedding was the perfect excuse for me to go crazy sewing something fancy for him. My son's outfit turned out to be the best use of free patterns and upcycled materials, so that's the one I wanted to showcase for you today.

Thrifty Handmade Wedding, a refashion by Sew Thrifty

The original shirt was my husband's favorite shirt, but the collar was coming apart and just wasn't ok for him to wear to work anymore. He hated to give it up, so I snuck it away years ago in hopes of using it for a refashion one day. And today is the day! For the vest, I thrifted a pair of dress pants. The original intent was to find a jacket, but the pattern I used didn't fit the jackets I found, so I decided on pants. And, I found these for 50% off - only $2! I tried to keep the original welted pockets, but they were slightly too big, so I had to sew my own. You can see here how the cuffs from the original shirt were used for my son's shirt. I loved that I didn't have to sew all that. And the buttons were reused as well! I did have to improvise on the collar, since I couldn't re-use that section and I was running out of fabric. Luckily I had some spare white cotton that I used to line the inside of the collar, since that section wouldn't really get seen anyway and the outside of the collar came from the back of the original shirt.

{Do-da-doo! Here comes the bride!}

The vest came together nicely, even though I wasn't able to use any of the original pockets from the pants. I lined it with a khaki cotton someone had given me from their stash. Then I accented it with orange buttons. Yes, I went with orange

{ok, Mama, enough with all this wedding stuff, where's the cake?!}

The tie was made from a free pattern as well, along with scraps of fabric that was given to me. And his pants and shoes were given to me by a friend. His whole outfit came to a whopping $5, since I include the price of thread, buttons, and the clasp for the tie. Not too bad for a fancy wedding outfit. I might be able to afford to dress him up more often.

If you're interested in learning more about the rest of my thrifty wedding outfits, come on over to my blog next week. The last-minute flower girl dress has a story so great I can't wait to share it!

Thanks so much Magda for having me as a part of your amazing refashion month!

Suit for my baby boy

When I first knew about my niece's wedding, first thing I thought was "what will I sew us for the event?!" Yes, that's right! I was so happy to have an excuse to sew some fancy clothes than just the practical ones I've been sewing lately.

A couple of weeks before the wedding I made the first outfit. And that first outfit was made for the smallest person in this house, my adorable  3m old baby boy. He looks just like a miniature man in his suit and everyone was melting over him. However, he wasn't so happy when I put it on for the first time. I was always a fan of little girls. Dresses and skirts and pretty things, after all, I learnt to sew as I created a full wardrobe for my barbie dolls as a child. Now that I have the chance to sew more often to a boy, I am surprised at how much I enjoy to do it. Before S. I would occasionally sew for my nephew but he wasn't really happy about the things I made him, and I totally understand why.

Back to the suit itself. Nahhhh, I didn't refashion this time. But I was able to use fabric from my stash. The main fabric is light grey with very thin white stripes. I bought it on sales, I guess this year already. For the vest lining I used purple satin I had left after an order (so, free fabric). For the inseam pockets and tie, I used scraps from an adorable quilt fabric. I bought the onesie for 1.99€ and that's all I spent to make it. Buttons were also in my stash forever.

Although I have a couple of vest patterns, none of them went all the way down to size 3M, but that's fine. I grabbed my favourite baby shirt pattern (used it here, here & here) and adjusted it in order to get a vest pattern. It couldn't be better. It was so easy and it's so tiny that I got it sewn in a blink of an eye.

I wasn't as lucky with the pants. I didn't have a pattern smaller than 6M with the design I was searching for, and I didn't care to draft my own this time. I had the perfect pattern, exactly what I wanted in size 6M. I guessed that would work, so I used a Burda pattern for this.

The onesie, as I said before, was store bought. All I had to do was cutting and patch a tie into it. It was a major success all through the party. I didn't try the whole thing on him until the day and as expected, the pants were a bit too large on him, but that's fine, he'll be wearing it for a little longer. The onesie was just the right size and I loved the see it on him.

|Refashion Runway| Week One: Plaid

It is here. The second season of Refashion Runway is on going, I am a contestant and today I am sharing my first entry (let's hope it's not the one and only... hehehe).

This week's theme is Plaid, when I knew about it I was pretty happy, that meant I could sew one outfit only and enter two of the challenges in line, since it also fits perfectly the 3rd week theme of Project Run and Play.

Let's talk about what I did though... Obviously, it is a refashioned outfit. I started with this:

I had these pants saved for a while, they were mine and I had bought them when I was still studying. We had to use a grey uniform and they suited the task perfectly. They were comfy and warm, since it's made of a soft wool. I had this saved with a note attached to it (turn it into pants for the little miss - it said). Mmmm... turns out I didn't want to make just another pair of pants for her. I saw potencial for more, and I came up with the shorts suit idea:

I started by cutting the shorts pieces. I used a self drafted pattern. I've been using this a lot, it is officially my most used pattern ever, it is the fifth time I use it and all those shorts look quite different.

For this I only used the bottom of the pants, I still had quite enough left to make the vest. Let's focus on the shorts first though.

Contrary to the 4 others I made before, this one has a waist band with a fly at the front. It closes up with a (showing) big black button (which matches the big buttons from the vest, though it is a bit smaller than the other 3), and two little snaps that are hidden when it's closed.
I also added an adjustable waist elastic because my daughter is getting tall but skinny, so most of the other shorts she got for her birthday would not stay in her waist. This solves that issue. I used the pants original waistband for the shorts. I only had to cut a bit of this out, and adjust the side loops.
For the side pockets and decoratice cuffs, I used a small scrap from a fabric I had for years. I actually would have loved to use it to line the vest too, but it wasn't nearly enough.

So, I was happy adding a little detail to it using a tiny bit of that fabric that I still had left, and using leftovers from a white sheet for the linning instead.

I traced the vest from an exisiting one and I really thought this would be too big for my G. and I was happy making something that would fit next year. After trying it on her, I wasn't so sure. It fits perfectly already. I believe she'll be able to wear the shorts next year, because of the adjustable waist, but I can't be sure about the vest.

On with the vest... I added a front pocketwith the scraps. I was going to make it plain but it was a bit yeloow(ish) and as to cover it, I chose to add a bow to the pocket. I used 3 big black buttons on the front, that match the shorts button as mention above, and at the back I used a buckle that I had saved from an old bag I dismissed long ago. It allows me to adjust the vest fit too.

Here's a few more shoots of the whole thing put together. G. was picking grapes at her grandparents and having a lot of fun. For the photoshoot she's also wearing a refashion shirt I made her for the Candy theme week over Project Run & Play. HERE

And that's it! Don't forget to check out my fellow competitors over Refashion Runway and vote for your favorite.

One vest from two Shirts

When I started the green pants refashion, I immediately started a refashioned vest too. The one above, yes. It was suppoused to be a match, and having G. wearing them together, at the same time! Well, I am putting that that clear because she never did and I deeply doubt she will. As I mentioned before, the pants are getting too small for her and she hasn't even wear the vest once. Why?
That's an easy one to answer. Her lovely, dear mommy, left the vest to finish until just a few days ago. Shame on me!!! Especially because there was only decorative seams left to finish. Which I did, while she went with my mom to the grocery store. And it took me just a few minutes.
I made it out of two knit tops I was given a while ago. Unfortunately I forgot to take before pictures. The one I used as lining was a brown turtle neck top and the the white and green one I used for the outside, was a very large tunic.
I even made a complain about this vest before, I had a blackout and was having a hard time figuring out on my own hoe to turn the lined vest to the right side. The tutorial I found there was very helpful.

So, what's next?!

So, the sew along for Project Run & Play is over now.
I still can't believe I made it! I did follow and sew along the six themes. Six outfits in six weeks. I am proud of myself. I am so proud, so happy that I made it, I did not give up, I did not left any item unfinished!
Yes! I did it and I like it.

Did you miss any of the entries? Don't worry, here's a short summary of what I made here:

 Boy's Week
And remember, there's a Tutorial for this outfit here!

Love is in the Air

So, what's next?!

Time for Sew In Tune. I have chosen my song, I have design my outfit, so I better start sewing, I don't want to be late. It starts off next Monday!
