Se há coisa que gosto mesmo é de dar presentes feitos à mão aos amigos e família. Gosto especialmente, de dá-los àqueles que sei que apreciam as prendas feitas à mão tanto quanto eu. Uma das melhores partes do processo - a meu ver - é tentar acertar em algo que a pessoa em particular vá gostar ou achar útil (tenho tentado esforçar-me para ter este ponto mais em conta ultimamente para evitar o acumulo de coisas desnecessárias em casa dos outros, tal como procuro fazer na minha). Assim, se acertares, todo o tempo e dedicação que colocaste na peça valem mesmo a pena. 

I really enjoy making handmade gifts for my friends and family. I especially like to dedicate time to those I know appreciate a handmade gift as much as I do. One of the best parts of the process - as I see it - is to look for something that particular person will like or find useful (I've been trying to work hard on this last matter to avoid clutter at other people's houses, just like I try to do in my own). Then if you get it right, then all the time and dedication you put into it is so damn worth it. 

A prenda de hoje, foi feita para a a minha querida amiga Susana. Ela cria coisas maravilhosas, e tem imenso jeito para tudo aquilo que mete na cabeça fazer, seja lá o que isso for. A minha amiga usa óculos, e imaginei que pudesse gostar de uma capa para os proteger mais um pouco. Não fazia ideia se já tinha alguma ou não, mas fiz. Fiquei feliz por assim ter sido, uma vez que me disse depois que queria uma. 

Today's gift was made for my dear friend Susana. She creates wonderful things, and she's quite handy at anything she sets her mind in to make, whatever that is. My friends wears glasses, and I figured she might enjoy a case to keep them safer. I had no clue if she had any already but I went for it. I am happy I did because she then told me she wanted one. 

Enquanto procurava ideias giras na internet para me inspirar, curzei-me com um passo-a-passo de capa para óculos, que acabei por mais ou menos seguir. Não me apeteceu ir até à impressora e imprimir o molde que o site fornece, por isso desenhei o meu próprio molde olhando para o da imagem no pap. Usei tecidos que já tinha em casa. Tinha este dos gatos que adoro, e que era um daqueles que gostamos tanto que nem o queremos cortar, sabem como é - mas sei que ela também gosta de gatos, por isso usei-o como forro, para que tivesse uma pequena surpresa ao abrir a capa. 

So, as I was searching for cool inspiration ideas on the internet, I came across this tutorial for the glasses case, and I sort of followed it. I was lazy to use my printer and print the pattern, so I drew my own pattern guided by the image on the tutorial. I used fabric from my stash. I had this one with the cats which I adore, and was saving, because you know, you love your fabric so much it gets hard to cut it - but I know she loves cats too, so I used it for the lining so she could have a nice little surprise once she opened it. 

Tea Bag Pouch Keyring Tutorial

Há uns dias publiquei a carteirinha para chás e porta-chaves que fiz para a minha colega e pelo menos duas pessoas mostraram interesse em querer fazer uma igual. Isso é o quanto basta para que eu faça um passo a passo aqui para o blog. Queria fazer uma para mim também, e assim que vi os comentários, meti mãos na massa e comecei. Foi o empurrão que precisava, de outra forma, poderia continuar a adiar fazer a minha. 

A few days ago I posted the tea bag pouch keyring I made for a friend and two readers showed interest in making their own. You know that is enough to get me working on a tutorial for the blog. I wanted to make one for myself too, so as soon as I read their comments I strarted working on it. It was the motivation I needed, otherwise, I would probably keep on postponing it. 

Caso queiram fazer uma, deixo-vos então aqui os passos para isso. Antes de mais nada, há que reunir o material necessário e cortar as peças de tecido necessárias (e já vou assumindo que têm o básico como linhas, máquina, etc). Para a minha parte exterior usei um painel em patchwork que já tinha costurado antes, mas claro, podem usar um pedaço de tecido simples.

Anyway... if you want to make one too, here's how to. First of all, gather your supplies and cut your fabric (I am assuming you have all the sewing basics like thread, machine, etc). On the picture above there's everything you need. For my main (outside) fabric I used a patchwork panel I had put together, but you can just cut a piece of fabric, of course. 

Na imagem acima têm tudo o que vão precisar com excepção de um pedaço de entretela termocolante, de resto está tudo descrito. Vamos começar por cortar todas as peças. Eu usei tecidos diferentes mas podem usar tudo da mesma cor também.

In the picture above, you have all the supplies needed for the project except for a little bit of fusible interfacing. We'll start by cutting all the pieces. I used different fabrics but you can use just one of course. 

1. Dobrar os bolsos ao meio na altura e vincar com o ferro. 

2. No tecido do forro, vamos medir 2cm para dentro de cada lateral em cima e em baixo. Marcar uma linha. 

3. Colocar um dos bolsos (com a dobra virada para o meio da peça) e prender com alfinetes. Repetir para a outra margem. 

4. Coser a 0,5cm. 

5. Colocar em cada ponta mais um bolso, desta vez mesmo encostado à margem da peça do forro. Prender com alfinetes. Coser. 

1. Fold the pockets in half height wise and press with the iron. 

2. Measure 2cm from each edge on the lining fabric, and mark ta line there. 

3. Pin one of the pockets, with the folded edge facing the center of the piece, on the line you created. Repeat for the other edge. 

4. Sew at 0,5cm. 

5. Place another pocket on top of the previous, but at the very edge of each side. Pin in place, and sew it. 

|Quando andei a editar as fotos apaguei a seguinte sequência sem querer, por isso não têm número, mas sigam a ordem das fotos| Vamos fazer a tira para prender a argola do porta-chaves, para isso, cortamos uma tira de entretela e colamos ao tecido com o ferro. Dobram-se 0,5cm do tecido para dentro nos lados mais compridos e marcam-se com o ferro. Depois dobra-se a peça ao meio, volta a marcar-se com o ferro e leva-se à máquina a correr a cerca de 3mm da beira a cada lateral. Passa-se a tira pela argola do porta-chaves, dobrando-a ao meio e colocando a argola mesmo no centro,  cose-se o mais perto possível (como na foto), o uso de um pé calcador de fechos poderá ajudar. Para terminar, prende-se a tira precisamente a meio dos bolsos, com alfinetes, ou então com pespontos. 

|When I edited these photos I accidentaly deleted the steps above so they have no numbers on each photo, but you just follow the sequence and everything will be fine.| SO, let's make the keyring strip, and for that, we have to cut a small fusible interfacing piece and press on to our main piece. Fold 0,5cm at each of the longest edges, and iron on. Then you fold the piece in half, press it again, then topstitch it on your machine at a 3mm lenght in each side. Fold the strip in half and slide the ring, so it stays right in the center. Sew it as close to the ring as possble (as seen on picture), using a zipper foot may help. To finish, pin the strip to the lining piece, right in the center. You can baste it in place too. 

6. Agora com a peça do fecho, colar também um pedaço de entretela no meio.

7. Usar a chapinha do interior da mola como molde e marcar os dois buracos que vamos abrir a seguir. Cortar com a ponta da tesoura com muito cuidado.

8. Passar a parte exterior da mola pelas aberturas acabadas de fazer pelo direito do tecido. No avesso, colocar a argola nos ferros. Dobrar as abas com a ajuda de um alicate.

9. Dobrar a tira ao meio e cose deixando uma das pontas mais estreitas aberta para virar a peça.

10. Antes de virar aparar as costuras para baixar o volume.

11. Virar a peça com muito cuidado. Não é fácil, em alternativa podem sempre usar outro tipo de fecho, como as molas de plástico.

6. On the closure strip, iron on a little piece of interfacing. 

7. Use the small plate for the inside of your snap, as a guide and mark two holes you should carefully open. Use your scissors with care. 

8. Slide the snap front piece through the holes you just opened on the right side of your fabric. In the back, slide thr plate in place and fold the tabs with a pliers. 

9. Fold the stip in half, and sew. Leave one of the edges open so you can turn your piece outside out. 

10. Before you turn it, trim your seams to avoid bulk. 

11. Turn the piece very carefully. It won't be easy if you're using a magnet snap like I do, so you can probably use KAM snaps like I did in my previous or whatever you feel more comfortable with. 

12. Medir e marcar com um ponto 5cm do top no tecido exterior (de cima para baixo na que será a frente da carteira).

13. Vamos colocar a outra parte da mola e para isso voltamos a repetir o processo, chapa em cima do ponto que acabámos de marcar, marcar as duas aberturas, passar a mola pelas mesmas pela frente, colocar chapa por detrás e apertar com alicate.

14. Descobrimos o meio na outra lateral. 

15. Prendemos a fita com a mola virada para fora.

16. Deve ficar assim.

12. Measure and mark 5cm from the top on the main fabric (from top to bottom, which will be the pouch front). 

13. Insert the other part of the snap repeating the same process, use place as guide, mark holes place, cut them, slide snap on front, slide place on the back and fold with pliers. 

14. Find the center of the opposite edge, 

15. Pin the strip with the other part of the snap facing out. 

16. That's how it should look like. 

17. Prender o enchimento no lado direito da peça de tecido principal. 

18. Adicionar a nossa etiqueta se o quisermos fazer e onde quisermos fazer. 

19. Colocar tecido exterior e forro, direito com direito.  

20. Alguém comeu este passo! ahahah

21. Alfinetar tudo à volta e cose, deixar uma pequena abertura na base com cerca de 4cm. 

22. Virar a peça pela abertura, passar a ferro. 

23. Fechar a abertura com pontos invisíveis à mão. 

17. Pin the filling to the right side of your main fabric piece. 

18. If you want to add a tag do it now, where you want to. 

19. Put lining fabric on top of main fabric piece, right sides together. 

20. Someone ate this step! ahahah

21. Pin all around and sew, just leave a small opening with about 4cm to turn it around. 

22. Turn it around and press. 

23. Close the opening with invisible stitches. 

Parabéns, o vosso novo porta-chaves está terminado. Podem guardar os vossos chás preferidos na bolsa e desfrutá-los sempre que vos apetecer. Espero que tenha sido tudo claro. Já nem me lembro quando fiz um passo a passo, nem me lembrava da trabalheira que dá, mas se puder ajudar alguém, já valeu a pena.

E chegamos a Fevereiro e eu ainda tenho prendas de Natal para mostrar... como já tinha mencionado, vai aos poucos, aos poucos. Desta vez trago a prenda que fiz para a minha colega de trabalho. Reparei que o porta-chaves dela estava velhinho, é um D feito também em tecido, a inicial do seu nome.Além disso, gostamos muito de beber cházinho nos dias de inverno durante o nosso lanche, assim que lembrei-me de misturar tudo isto e fazer isto para ela.

And we're in February and I am still sharing Christmas gifts... as I mentioned before , it's coming slowly, slowly. This time there's the gift I made for my co-worker. I noticed her keyring was too old, it is a fabric D, her names initial. Besides, we both like to have a tea on our break in winter, so I thougt I could mix it all and make her this. 

Fiz-lhe uma carteirinha para chás que é ao mesmo tempo um porta-chaves. Usei o tecido amarelo que tinha comprado para fazer a prenda do filho dela, o jogo de bowling que já mostrei aqui, e mais uns retalhinhos que já tinha de há anos. Criei o molde à medida que o fui fazendo e correu muito bem. 

I made her this little teabag pouch which is at the same time a keyring. I used the same yellow fabric I bought to make her son's gift, the bowling set I showed here, and also a few little scraps I've had for years. I made the pattern as I sewed and it went pretty well. 

Na parte da frente da carteira, apliquei com um ponto em zigue zague a letra do nome dela para fazer lembrar o porta-chaves que ela já tinha. Acho que preciso de fazer um para mim também e ter sempre um par de chás à mão. Acredito que é uma lembrança engraçada para quem como nós, gosta de beber o seu. E vocês, o que acharam?

On the front of the teabag pouch, I've sewn with a zig zag stitch her name's initial, to remind her of the old keyring she already had. I think I need to make one of these for myself too, and have my tea bags always at hand. I believe it is a cute gift to someone like us, that loves to drink their tea. What do you think? 

Oliver +S "Little Things to Sew" Backpacks

Há uns anos atrás, comprei o livro Little Things to Sew da Olive + S, mas até há um par de meses nunca tinha costurado nenhuma das peças nele apresentadas. O livro está cheio de projectos giríssimos para fazer para os miúdos e por várias vezes planeei fazer vários deles. Alguns dão prendas bem giras também, mas... esses projectos que planeei foram sempre adiados em prol d'outros... a sina de quem costura!

A couple of years ago I bought this book Little Things to Sew by Oliver + S, but until a couple of months ago, I hadn't sewn one thing from it. The book is full of fun projects to sew for your kids and I planned on making a few of them a few times. Some of the projects make great gifts too, but... those projects were always postponed to give place to other... a sewer's life! 

No passado Natal, eu estava determinada a fazer quantas prendas à mão quantas aquelas que eu aguentasse e conseguisse fazer, e estas duas mochilas foram duas delas. Para as fazer usei o molde que quem no livro lá em cima.

This past Christmas I was so determined to give as many handmade gifts as my hands could make, and these two backpacks were two of the things I was able to make. For them, I finally used one of the patterns in the book above. 

Estas foram para duas meninas de 8 anos e sim, gostaram muito delas. O molde original é para uma mochila pinguim (a que podem ver na capa do livro lá em cima), mas eu optei pela versão mais simples. Adicionei uma pequena rendinha para astornar mais menininha. 

These were my gifts for two 8 year old girls and yes, they loved it. The original pattern, is for a penguin shaped backpack (the one you see in the cover of the book above), but I made the simplier version. Also added a little lace just to make it a tiny bit more girly. 

As mochilas são completamente forradas e dentro têm divisórias para os acessórios (que eu fiz a olho). O tecido dos mochos comprei-o numa mercado na Espanha, é bem grosso por isso aguenta-se muito bem, o que o torna perfeito para as mochilas. Ainda pensei adicionar alguma especie de enchimento para dar mais alguma estrutura mas depois desisti da ideia porque não se justificava. 

The backpacks are fully lined, and have space to accomodate your accessories too (I eyeballed it on mine). I got the owls fabric on a market in Spain, it is heavy and holds perfectly, that's why it was a great choice for the backpacks. I was thinking about using some filling of some sort for structure, but I then realised I wouldn't need it. 

O tecido do forro, comprei numa loja local, mas já não me recordo qual delas. Na verdade usei dois diferentes porque a meio caminho do corte percebi que não teria suficiente para ambas as mochilas e lá assumi os dois tecidos como design e não falha. hahaha. 

I bought the linning fabric locally, but I can't remember quite well where anymore. I actually used two different ones because I realised I wouldn't have enough of the red one for both pieces, and I had started cutting so, let's make it a design details not a mistake. ahahah 

Fiquei bem feliz de as ter feito e com tanta antecedência para o Natal - ando sempre num corre corre quando toca a acabar prendas a tempo. Tenho mais alguns projectos do livro que adorava fazer, como a "lancheira"... Também dá uma bela prenda tanto para crianças como para adultos. Talvez seja a minha próxima coisa a fazer do livro. Espero que não leve mais uns anos. Mesmo porque também está lá uma mala a tira colo que adorava fazer para a minha filha. 

I was pretty happy that I made these, and I made them quite before Christmas - I'm always in a hurry to finish gifts in time. I have more projects from the book that I'd love to make, like the bento box carrier... That makes a great gift even for an adult. That might be my next sew from the book. I hope it won't take me ages again though. There's also a messenger bag I'd love to make for my daughter. 

Oh Oh Oh Santa is coming

Já começa a cheirar a Natal por todos os cantos. Cá em casa, já fiz a minha lista e já comecei a preparar as prendas deste ano. Ainda não decorei, não consigo fazê-lo antes de Dezembro, mas já tenho algumas ideias de coisas que gostava de fazer este ano. 

It's starting to smell like Christmas everywhere. As for me, I have my presents list done and I have started preparing some. I haven't started with the decorations yet, I just can't before December, although I have a good idea of which things I want to make. 

Entretanto surgiu a oportunidade de um teste diferente, um saco em forma de Pai Natal (ou duende, ou bonecos de neve - fica ao vosso critério - vejam mais aqui). Eu ainda tenho esperança de conseguir fazer mais (tenho sempre mais planos que tempo nestas alturas), para que cada um dos miúdos receba um. A ideia é encher com mimos que podem ser cartões com ideias de atividades para fazermos juntos, doces, ou outros miminhos que lhes agrade. 

In the mean while I was able to get to test a different pattern, a Santa stocking bag (or elf, or snowmen as seen on the test group - it's up to you - see more here). I hope I still get to make a second one (I always have more plans than time to get them done by this time), so each of my kids get its own. The idea is to fill it up with treats which can be activity cards for us to make together, sweets and every other little treat they like. 

A minha parte preferida é a barba do Pai Natal. Não tinha tecido com pêlo (branco, isto é) e pensei em usar no seu lugar esta lã que tenho por cá há anos. Comprei-a para outro Pai Natal, vejam aqui. Juntei cada fio um a um. Depois costurei tudo junto. Gosto de ver a barba presa em baixo ou solta. O bigode e o cabelo foram feitos da mesma forma. Levei uma eternidade para o fazer, mas fiquei tão orgulhosa quando terminei. E mais uma vez... foi um grande empurrão à criatividadetrabalhar com aquilo que já tinha por casa. 

My favorite thing about my own Santa is the beard. I was running out of fur fabric (white, it is) and thought about this yarn I had for a few years. I bought it for another Santa, see it here. I attached each piece of it, one by one. Then I sewed it together. I like it tight on the bottom or just loose. The mustach and hair were made the same way. It took me forever but I was so proud once I finished. And again... hails for creativity boost everytime I have to work with what I already have. 

O molde traz dois tamanhos diferentes de pompons, que eu fiz em branco e vermelho. Não os acham tão fofos? Adoro pompons, serei a única? Aprendi a fazê-los com a minha mãe quando era criança, e gosto deles desde então. 

The pattern comes with two different pompom sizes, which I did in white and red. Aren't they so  cute? Am I the only one to love pompoms? I learned how to make them when I was very little, with my mom, and I've loved them ever since. 

One Thimble #13

Vêm as duas peças acima?! São dois dos moldes que fazem parte da 13º edição da revista digital One Thimble, a mesma que vos apresentei aqui e aqui e que acabou de sair e vale a pena espreitarem. 

See those two pieces above?! They are two of the patterns from the 13th edition of One Thimble, a digital magazine I shared with you before, as here and here. It was just realised and it's worth a look. 

Para começar, mostro-vos a pochete. O molde é Sakuro Clutch da Little Moo Designs. Confesso que o molde é bem mais interessante do que esta que eu fiz, com uma aplicação super gira. Andava a precisar de uma bolsa para o meu netbook, mas nunca mais me decidia a fazer uma, porque sinceramente não tenho propriamente dedicado tempo algum às costuras. Quando penso nisso, fico um bocadinho triste, mas são fases, e a vida vai acontecendo com outras prioridades, ou necessidades. 

To start, here's a clutch. It is the Sakuro Clutch pattern, by Little Moo Designs. I confess, the pattern is much more interesting than this one I am showing you. I was needing a bag for my netbook for a while, but I never got around to actually make one, because I haven't spent much time sewing lately. When I think about it, I get a bit sad, but there are fases, and life happens with other priorities and needs. 

Tão pouco consegui arranjar a quinquilharia necessária para fazer a pochete como no molde, e isso apenas me motivou mais a simplificar e fazer o que realmente necessitava. Gosto de olhar para além do óbvio em cada molde que uso, e ajustá-lo a mim. O tamanho é ideal para o meu netbook, e fiquei muito satisfeita, claro.

I couldn't find the proper hardware for this pattern and that was a good motivation to simplify and make what I really needed. I like to see beyond every pattern I use, and adjust it to me. The size was just perfect for my netbook and I was quite pleased, of course. 

Adoro o tecido (exterior) que usei. Tenho-o há vários anos e só tinha usado um bocadinho até aqui para fazer outra clutch, que já nem tenho (uma amiga gostou tanto dela que a ofereci). Já nem sei onde o comprei. O tecido rosa faz parte dos restos de uma forra de sofá que fiz no ano passado. O botão, lindo por sinal, creio que veio num molhe de botões que comprei num mercado de velharias. Fica ou não fica bem?

I love this fabric (the exterior). I have it for years and had used it only once in a small portion to make another clutch, that I don't even own anymore (a friend liked it so much I gave it to her). I don't even know where I bought it anymore. The pink fabric was a scrap left from sofa cover I made last year. I got the button on a thrift market with a bunch of them, and it's beautiful by the way. Does it, or does it not look sogood here?

E agora que já vos falei da bolsa, toca a mostrar a peça que tanto eu como a miúda gostámos mais. O molde é o Orbis Skinny Harem Pants da Sofilantjes. Já conhecia a designer, gostei do molde mal o vi e realmente não desiludiu. O bonus do moldo é tanto dar para rapazes como raparigas, já que tenho ambos. Vai dos 12M aos 12A, e fiquei cheia de pena dos 12 anos só me servirem quando se trata de blusas ou vestidos, mas ainda pensei em ajustar e fazer umas para mim.

And now that I have told you about the bag, I am up to tell you about our (my girl's and mine) fave piece. The pattern is Orbis Skinny Harem Pants by Sofilantjes. I already knew the designer, loved the pattern as soon as I saw it and it didn't disappoint. The bonus is that it is a good pattern either for girls and boys, since I have both. It goes from size 12M to size 12, and I felt quite sad that size 12 only fits me when it comes to tops or dresses, although I considered adjusting this and make myself a pair. 

Para a minha miúda, escolhi fazer o tamanho 6 anos apesar dela vestir atualmente o tamanho 5. Queria que as calças durassem um pouco mais, porque todos nós, com filhos sabemos o quão depressa eles crescem, mas a verdade é que não ficou tão grande como pensei que fosse ficar. Tem sim espaço para crescer, mas veste muito bem agora também.

I chose making my daughter a size 6 although she's wearing a 5 at the moment. I wanted to make this last a little longer, because, you know if you have kids, that they grow out of their clothes quite quickly, but it's not as big as I thought it'd be. It does have room to grow, but it's pretty wearable already. 

Acho imensa piada ao bolso, super original, começa à frente e vai até atrás. O pai cá de casa perguntou se as calças não estavam vestidas ao contrário quando as viu, isso fez-me rir. Homens! O tecido (principal) usado foi-me oferecido pela mesma leitora que me ofereceu os tecidos (e mais!!!) que usei nos modelos que fiz na última tour de lançamento da OT. Não foi planeado, só me apercebi do fato ao escrever este post. O tecido dos detalhes, já o tinha também há muito tempo... é um bocadinho duro mas tem uma ótima elastecidade.

I really dig the pocket, it is super original, starting at the front and ending at the back. Dad thought the pants were put on the wrong way when he saw them, that made me laugh. Men! the (main) fabric was gifted to me by the same reader that gave me the fabrics (and more!!!) that I used in the pieces sewn for the latest OT tour. I didn't plan it, and only noticed this as I was writing this post. The fabric I used for the details was in my stash for a while too... it is a bit stiff but has a great stretch. 

Optei por colocar 5 botões pequeninos, e bem simples, na falta de ter algo melhor para usar. Com tantos que tenho, parece sempre faltar o ideal para certas peças. Para compensar a falta de originalidade na escolha dos botões, tentei fazer algo diferente na forma como preguei os mesmos. Eu gostei, e vocês?

I went for 5 small and quite simple buttons, due to the fact that I didn't have anything else better to use. I have a huge stash and it always seems like the right one is missing when it comes to some pieces. To make up for the lack of originality on my button choices, I tried to make something different in the way I attached them. I liked it, did you too?

Se calhar é porque os meus filhotes estão bem fornecidos de roupa para os próximos tempos; ou porque eu realmente também, precisar, não preciso de nada especial para mim; ou simplesmente é porque me apetecem coisas diferentes, mas é facto que ando a costurar mais coisas para além de roupas e isso faz-me sentir confortável, fora da minha zona de conforto. Desta vez, aproveitei a tour da Radiant Home Designs, que celebra o 2º aniversário na criação dos seus moldes e fiz uma mochila. Já que estamos em Dezembro, e isto já comecei a fazer o mês passado, aproveito as tours para fazer algumas prendas de Natal, e este era o caso. Sim, era, porque depois de terminar gostei tanto da mochila que acho que vou ficar com ela. Está encostada, à espera que me decida.

Maybe it is because my kids already have plenty of clothes for now; or maybe it is because I don't really need new clother eithrr; or maybe, it is just because I feel like making different things lately,  the fact is that I've been sewing a few items besides clothes, and that makes me feel comfortable out of my comfort zone. This time, I jumped on the 2nd anniversary tour from Radiant Home Designs, and got the chance to sew a rucksack. It is December, and I've actually started doing this in November, but I am using tours to motivate me into making some Christmas gifts, and this was the case. Yes, it was, because after finishing I liked it so much that I am considering keeping this one to myself. It is waiting on me to decide. 

Este foi um dos primeiros dois moldes da Sara, a designer por detrás da marca, e foram recentemente atualizados e melhorados. De todos os seus moldes, escolhi este porque para mim me pareceu o mais interessante. Tive alguma dificuldade em encontrar os materiais indicados, fivelas, argolas, etc, mas acabei por me safar. Nem todos são iguais, com pena minha, mas servem para o efeito e quem sabe consiga encontrar alguns que coincidam mais tarde e possa trocar. Gosto que as alças permitam que a usemos às costas, ou ao ombro.

This was one of the two first patterns from Sara, the designer behind it, and they were recently updated and improved. Of all her patterns, I chose this one, which seemed to be the most interesting one in my opinion. I had some trouble trying to find the hardware for this one, but I got away with it. Sadly not all of them are the same (in color), but they do the job for now, and hopefully I'll be able to find the same equal ones to switch later. I really like that the way the straps are attached, allow it to be carried on your back or your shoulder. 

A minha mochila não está muito estruturada, a entretela que tinha grossa, não era suficiente, e fui demasiado preguiçosa para ir comprar mais, fiz a peça mesmo sem entretela e gostei da forma como cai, como ambos os tecidos eram pesados, não fica muito desengonçada. Usei bombazine grossa para a base, flanela para o forro, e o tecido principal das bolinhas é de algodão. A mochila, inclui dois bolsos interiores, num deles cabe o meu netbook à vontade, e o outro mais pequeno tem fecho e é forrado (o interior do fecho fica escondido), mais uma nova técnica que juntei ao reportório, cujo passo a passo pode ser encontrado aqui. No exterior, conta também com dois bolsos laterais, fecha com um dobra no topo e depois com ganchos. O molde trás a opção de incluir um fecho, mas eu passei à frente, sou um bocadinho avessa a fechos e ando a utilizar demasiados ultimamente.

My rucksack isn't as structured as it could be, the heavy interfacing I had wasn't enough for the project, and I was way to lazy to go and get some more, so I didn't use any, but I like how it looks, because my fabrics were all heavy it doesn't look too gangling. I used a wide corduroy as contrast, flannel for the lining and cotton for the main polka dots fabric. The rucksack comes with two interior pockets, my netbook fits the larger one perfectly, and the smaller ones closes with a professionally finished zipper (the zipper wrong side is hidden in the lining), a new technique for my list, which tutorial you can find here. On the exterior, there's also two side pockets, and the top of the sack folds and closes with hooks. There's also the option of adding a zipper, but I skipped it because zippers and I are not the best of friends and I feel like I've been using them too much lately.

Mais uma pattern tour aqui neste cantinho. Normalmente sinto-me sempre feliz e agradecida por cada uma delas, mas confesso que neste caso, sinto-me muito orgulhosa da designer em causa. A pattern tour de hoje, é organizada pela Amy McDonald, e ela é a criadora por detrás dos moldes Momma Quail Patterns. Eu testei o que foi o primeiro molde dela (aqui) e fiquei muito bem impressionada, colocando-a de imediato na minha lista de preferidas. Fiquei muito feliz mesmo quando soube da tour e claro que me candidatei também. A Amy tem 12 moldes disponíveis, e entre eles, está esta pasta que ela criou porque o seu filho de 3 anos adora a pasta do avô. Escolhi este, porque o Natal é já daqui a umas semanas, e para quem gosta de fazer as suas prendas, o tempo começa a apertar, assim, que unindo o útil ao agradável, decidi transformar estas pastas, tão masculinas, em malas para meninas, mais precisamente, malas para as meninas transportarem as suas Barbies ou outras. Fui, inspirada pela minha filha, que pediu uma Barbie rock star para o Natal (tem de ser a do cabelo azul, mamã - diz ela. Tratado!). 

Another pattern tour here. I usually am always happy and glad for each of them, but I have to congfess that in this case, I am feeling really proud for the designer. Today's pattern tour is organized by Amy McDonald, and she's the designer behind Momma Quail Patterns. I've tested what was her first pattern (here) and I was quite impressed, putting her in my top designers. I was really happy when I read about the tour and of course, I signed for it as well. Amy has  12 available patterns, and from those, there's this briefcase she created for her 3 year old who loves his grandpa briefcase. I picked this one, because Christmas is just in a few weeks, and if just like me you enjoy making your gifts, you know that there's not much time left right? So, why not make it count and make a couple of gifts all along? I turned this masculine briefcases into pretty girly ones, mostly for girls to carry their Barbies and similars all around. This was inspired by my daughter, she asked for a Rock Star Barbie for Christmas too (It has to be the one with the blue hair mom! - she says. Taken care of!). 

Nesta publicação tenho apenas duas para vos mostrar, mas comecei a fazer três ao mesmo tempo. Usei o mesmo tecido para todas, a única alteração de uma para as outras é a aplicação da boneca na parte exterior. Cada uma foi feita com uma cor/tecido diferentes. A terceira não tive tempo de terminar, pois embora as instruções sejam muito boas, devido a uma pequena falha no meu inglês, cometi um erro que só vim a descobrir muito mais tarde, depois de horas e horas a costurar - porque estava a fazer as 3 ao mesmo tempo - e tive que desmanchar tudo, tudinho!!! aunffff fiquei tão desanimada, que depois só continuei com uma. E quando a terminei, animei-me outra vez, era tão mais fácil do que o que eu tinha inventado, e depois disso, correu tão bem, que agarrei-me novamente às outras duas, mas acabei por terminar só uma, uma vez que a G. ficou doente e fiquei sem tempo de terminar todas. Facto: as fitas na mala com a aplicação rosa, serviram para tapar um corte acidental que fiz na peça. 

In this post, I only have two briefcases to show you, but in fact they were three when I started. I used the same fabric for all of them, the only exception was the appliqué I used on the outside of each. I used adifferent fabric/color for each. I had no time to finish the third one, because although the instructions are easy to follow, I had an issue with the language which led me to a huge mistake, and I only noticed that after many hours of sewing - remember I was sewing all three at the same time - and I had to unpick it all. aunffff I was so depressed about it, that I only continued with one. When I was done, I was into it again, it was so much easier than what I made it up, and after fixing it it went so smoothly that I went back to the other two. Time was short though, and I knew I wouldn't be able to finish both, especially because G. got sick, so I only finished one more. Fact: the bands on the pink applique briefcase, were there to cover up an accidental cut I made into the piece. 

No molde as opções de bolsos interiores, são um grande para um livro, um mais pequeno para lápis de cor/feltros ou lápis de cera de um lado, e este último alterei, criando apenas duas bolsas, para as meninas guardarem as roupas das bonecas por exemplo. E do outro lado, um bolso com uma janela que permite ver o seu interior, fechado com um fecho (perfeito para guardar as peças mais pequenas como os sapatos, malas, etc). 

In the pattern, you find a book pocket inside, a pencil or crayons pocket, and this lattest one was the only one I changed, creating just two pockets so girls can keep their doll's clothes, for example. In the other side, there's like a window pocket, closed with a zipper that allows to see what's inside (perfect to keep smaller pieces, like doll's shoes, bags, etc).

This is a refashion that I did way over a year ago. A request from my sister. Back in 2012, I made a few dresses for all of us, for my cousin's wedding. I blogged about them here. Last year my sister had another event to go to, and wanted to have my niece wearing the same dress again. The problem was that it would take place in a less warmer season and she asked me to make L. a little cardigan or a bolero. 

 

I didn't have any orange fabric back then, so into the refashion pile we went. My mom had just brought me another bag of clothes someone else had given her, and she didn't want... so, into my stash it went. It was a woman's sized shirt, in a very light and slippery shiny knit. I kept it because I loved the embroidery on the front. I'm sorry the before picture isn't that good. 

When we picked this piece, I felt a bit sad I was going to lose that embroidery. I was able to use the shirt partially, I saved that piece for a future project. It's still waiting... and will for as long as it has to be, until I find the perfect destiny for it. 

But I did turn part of the shirt into a bolero for my niece. She loved it. You see the bag she's carrying? It's a crochet one and my mom made it for her. She was proud of her handmades, she loves when we make things for her, I wish she never changes because her brother is 8 and not so easy to satisfy. 

To make this bolero, I tried to "copy" the pattern from my daughter's 9M sized bolero. I loved the shape so much I just had to use it for the niece's. It was a bit trial and error, and although they didn't complain, I thought it was a bit wide in the end. 

Maternity Bag Tutorial & free pattern |Sew-a-bration of Womanhood||

You might have heard about the Make for Mom Series last year. It was hosted by the Shaffer Sisters, and this year it's back with a brand new name (see why they have changed it here), and it is co-hosted with Ajaire from Call Ajaire (she's got her own series going on too, called Monthly MashUp, have you heard of it?).

I feel more than honoured to be part of this Series, and join all these wonderful and talented ladies in a celebration of the womanhood. Because we are just more than moms, and because we deserve to love ourselves the way we are.  

I first thought about making myself an outfit, but because I've been participating in Challenge Create, I was able to sew myself some brand new pieces to fill my wardrobe. So, I quickly knew I needed to make something else. Apart from the clothes I made through the competition I mentioned above, I don't get to sew much for myself lately... or ever since I became a mom. My daughter, and now the baby that's making his way into our family pretty soon, take all my attention and sewing time. I was happy I had to make something for myself this time. It forced me to sew what I really needed. And I made myself a maternity bag, to take to the hospital when delivery time comes. It will also work great as a sports bag later, or other purposes. 

I confess it turned out better than I had expected. Only one thing went wrong, I tried to home-laminate my fabric (I have done that before for small wallets), and was planning a tutorial for that too, but my fabric just wouldn't take the plastic. It would fuse to the iron board fabric, or the fabric I had betwen the plastic and iron, and still wouldn't fuse with my polka dot fabric. After two tries I gave up. I was just hoping to get my bag a little thicker but it worked just as is. 

This bag is quite easy to sew, simple. There are only a few features to point out... the long hangers and the side pocket, perfect to hold a bootle of water or anything else you need on hand when using it. I picked this fabric I had in my stash since my daughter's birthday last year. It is the same I used to make her birthday outfit, and more recently a skirt. The hangers were recycled from two men hoodies and the zipper was previously part of a leather bag I destroyed a few months ago. 

Of course, making a pattern to share was on top of my intentions, so a pattern was created. And, you can find it HERE. If you want to make your own bag too, grab the pattern in the previous link, check out the supplies needed and follow the next steps to make it. 

* My measures are in metrical system in the picture, but I'll add it in inches in the steps, so pay attention. *

Let's start our bag, shall we?! Just one more thing, you can do option one which is exactly like mine, or option two with an extra pocket on the other side. If you chose to make option two, note that you should cut two pocket pieces. 

Start by cutting all your pieces. Grab pieces number one, it will be the zipper "panel" on top of the bag; and press 1cm (3/8") towards the wrong side as shown in image 1. Get your zipper (21" or longer - you can cut the excess later) and sew the pattern pieces you just pressed to it. First one side (2) and then the other (3). 

Let's get pattern piece number two now. It will make the side and bottom of our bag. Press 1cm (3/8'') to the wrong side again at each shorter edge (4). Pin one edge to the previous pieces you sewn to the zipper and sew too (5). and the other edge to the second edge of the zipper pieces too. You'll get like a full circle piece. 

We'll go to the pocket now. Pin and sew the corners with a 1/6" seam (6), fold about 2,5 cm (1'') - as marked on pattern piece, press (7) and sew in place (8). 

With a savety pin, inssert your elastic (5 1/2'' long, and 5/8'' wide) in the seam you just sewn (9), pull it carefully until it reaches the edge, pin in place (10), and keep pulling your elastic until it reaches the other edge (11), pin too and take your savety pin off. The red from the fabric in the photos, doesn't make it really easy to understand, but I will try my best to explain it to you. Grab the previous pieces you've sewn together. Match the top of your pocket (the elastic side) to the edge right before where your zipper starts (the pocket should be lined with pattern piece number two). Pin it in the sides (12) and bottom (13). Sew the bottom of the pocket. If you want to add a second pocket, just repeat the steps. 

* I did this before I sewn those previous pieces together while making mine, and then I realised it hasn't been the greatest idea ever), so I am trying to show you the easiest way to make it. 

Not much left to do, right now. Get pieces number 4 ( I call them side panels) and your ribbon/hangers. Start by pinning one edge to the bottom of the bag piece, following the pattern marks (14) and sew in place. Note that you don't sew all the way up, only until the marking on the pattern. Then add the other edge to the second marks, and sew in place too. Repeat with the other piece. Find the half of you bottom piece (pattern piece number two), and the half of the side panels too. Pin them together (with right sides together) and start pinning the rest of the patterns from there. Sew them in place. Once you get one side panel attached, repeat for the next. Your bag is done. All you have to do is to finish your seams. I did a zigzag stitch, but you can also finish it with a bias tape, it will look prettier on the inside. 

And that's it. We're done. I hope these instructions were clear enough. You can always contact me if you have any doubts.
